Muse score 4 files not opening charts made in previous versions
I have tried all of the recommendations I found in other forums: resetting all my styles to default, clicking "open with" muse score 4 when I am right clicking to open the score. Nothing works, the old scores just look totally messed up in Musescore 4. I had this happen a number of times now :( Please help! Thank you! <3

You will get a better reply if you attach an example of an old score which you can't open in MS4. You can use the button "Choose a file" to attach the example score (.mscz file) here when you reply in this thread.

So MS4 does open scores from older versions - in spite of the title of your post??
Here are two suggestions:
1. Use Ctrl+A (select all) then Ctrl+R (reset all).
2. MS 3 and MS4 need more space to avoid collision of elements in the score. So try reducing the Scaling a bit: Format > Page settings ... > Scaling > Stave space > reduce with the arrow (e.g. from 1.750mm to 1.550mm).
