show bar lines
Hello,
I am not sure how to describe this. I had the music laid out with four systems per page and varying bars per system, usually six, over four pages. Then suddenly it became all one page as I was scrolling. Consecutive empty bars are all condensed into one big bar. I can't get back to the normal view. How do I display all the pages and bars? it's really hard to work on this way.

You can, simply press 'm'.
This is the shortcut to toggle between single and multi measure rests.
Normally this is used in the parts to get a more condensed sheet for the musicians.

Thanks! I couldn't even think of a search term to look it up with. Such an easy fix, yet not at all obvious.

'M' for 'Multimeasure Rest'!
Sometimes abbreviations can not be coded as you would like :-).
Some important ones you just have to learn ...
The default settings to use them or not can be found under "Format/Style/Score".
See the section in the handbook: https://musescore.org/en/handbook/4/measure-rests-and-multimeasure-rests
