tied eighth notes
Why are eighth notes automatically tied, instead of being individual notes?
I am using Muse score 3, and all successive eighth notes are tied together.

I am guessing that when you say "tied together" you mean "beamed together".
If so, see https://musescore.org/en/handbook/3/beams for how to adjust beaming in MU 3.
If I guessed wrong, come back and explain your problem in more detail.
