Might be due to the chord symbols and the notes it resolves to

is there a way to turn off chord playback in the web's visualizer?

No, you'd need to turn it off in the MuseScore Editor and then upload to musescore.com

that's what I've done but it's still trying to render the chord symbols into the visualizer

thank you so mucyh for your help by the way jojo
So the issue stems from chord symbols being used - whether or not it is muted in playback the visualizer will try to render it in the piano keyboard. Is this working as designed? That is arguable I would say the better experience would be not to visualize them.
Workaround:
My workaround was to add staff text instead of adding chords (with shift+k). I want the chord symbols to not be functional, but purely visual.
You can close this since I found a solution, but if you think this is a bug it should be filed

You may report that bug, if there is a one, on musescore.com.
