Both files are empty. They contain only many, many repeating bytes of value 00.

how its possible? - don't know but it's never happened to me (using ubuntu)
how can i make it not happend again - you probably can't prevent it
But, you can limit the damage by using File >Save As... and using a new filename every so often.
