This should be good. Firing up the popcorn.

OK, the contrabass is written with just a bass clef. In Musescore 3 when you click on Concert Pitch, you would get that 8 clef and no ledger lines. Musescore 4 you start out with an 8 clef, and pressing Concert Pitch returns to the original bass clef with ledger lines. Is there a way to not have that 8 clef and still have the ledger lines? Contrabass music I've never seen written with that 8 clef.

Bass (and tuba) play an octave lower than written. Create a score with cello and contrabass. In my MU4 there is no 8 clef to start with. In the bass part add a bottom space A. C+P that into the cello and see the note an octave down. In my MU4 hitting the concert pitch button only adds the 8. Which isn't really needed. Why do you need ledger lines?

Well, this is what I mean: The first image is a tuba and contrabass selected without pressing Concert Pitch or changing the clef in any way:

The next one shows what happens when you press Concert Pitch. I don't like that clef, it gives me nightmares:

And this is what happens when you grab a bass clef from the palette:

So in the first image it uses a regular bass clef. So does the last image. But the behavior is different.

Well, this behavior is correct and exactly like MU3 If you don't like the octave clef for contrabasses, don't use Concert Pitch mode. It's never been different in any version of MuseScore (well, except for very old versions that always used the octave clef, even when transposed). Concert pitch shows the actual pitch - that's the whole point. So if you don't want ledger lines, use the octave clef. Since the concert score is virtually never published, it shouldn't matter if you are seeing it while editing.

There is however an open request for a brand new option, one that would basically be "concert pitch except for octaves". Sounds like you might like that mode if anyone ever designs and implements such a feature. but for now, you have the choice: a) don't use concert pitch mode for contrabasses, b) embrace the ledger lines, or c) get help with the sleep disorders...

You have the option of setting up your score so that contrabass either is not a transposing instrument but instead always use there octave clef, or you can set it up as a transposing instrument (at the octave), and then use the octave clef only in concert pitch mode. The latter is the default in both MU3 and MU4, but if you have a score that has been set up differently from the default, you can simply change it. Easiest way would actually be to use the Instruments panel to replace the instrument - with contrabass again. This should reset those as well as other settings that were inappropriately customized. But if for whatever reason that doesn't work for your particular score, you can change the transposition yourself in Staff/Part properties, and the clef by simply adding the clef you for the mode you are currently in.

if you need further assistance, just attach your score and describe what you are having trouble with in more detail.
