I do not completly understand what you mean, especially with the third crotchet.
A 4/4 measure can only have two triplets written with crotchets. You must select a minim note or rest to create crotchet triplets ,,,
Write these triplets in this way:
I am also a new user and found entering tuplets confusing... after a little patience I realised that I need to be careful what is actually selected when hitting the tuplet button.
Whilst there are multiple ways to do this, I found the easiest way is to create a rest for the length of the desired tuplet (in your case a crotchet rest) then make sure that is selected when you hit the tuplet button, that should create 3 rests with the triplet bracket which you can then insert notes into.

You can select a note or a rest.
In his case, however, it must be a minim rest or note, not a crotchet, because he wants a triplet with crotchets.
Selecting a (semiquaver, false) semibreve note: three minim notes as a triplet,
Selection of a minim note: three quarter notes,
Selection of a quarter note: three eighth notes as the resulting triplet. And so on ...

For three minim notes (half notes) as a triplet, you meant selecting a semibreve (whole note), yes?

Excuse me. Yes, indeed. English is not my first language and especially British English in music terms ...
I have corrected it above.

No problem...
In fact, I had to check the Glossary myself to be sure... :-)
I'm more familiar with:
"Selection of a quarter note: three eighth notes as the resulting triplet."
than with:
"Selection of a crotchet: three quavers as the resulting triplet."

Yes, indeed, especially if you translate from German into English, where a half note is a "Halbe Note" and an eighth note is an "Achtel Note" ... :-)

Using the keyboard makes things easier for me.
To enter a triplet of 1/8 notes:
5 CTRL+3
A triplets of 1/4 notes :
6 CTRL+3
A triplet of 1/16 notes :
4 CTRL+3
