lost playback

I've lost playback. Am on Mac 10.6.8 with musescore 1.3 revision 5702
Finale files play, itunes etc working fine. Have uninstalled and reinstalled mscore several times. new files don't play, older ones don't either. When inputting notes or trying playback I get a loud squeal (like feedback?) for a few seconds and then nothing. The squeal is loud whether the volume is up or down.

Here's a message i got when i returned to factory settings and musescore opened.

I don't know what this means - it looks like something is missing
Anyone ever run into this?
