spacing of chord symbols when importing xml from Finale

• Feb 18, 2025 - 18:27

This question has to do with the appearance of chord symbols. I was a Finale user, currently trying to switch over to MuseScore, with mixed results. I had a score in Finale to which I had added lyrics, but as yet no chord symbols. I saved it as an .xml file and then opened it with MuseScore. I tried to continue working on the score by adding chord symbols, but I noticed that the spacing is bad, so I want to rectify that. I’ve also noticed that when editing a file from scratch in MuseScore, not imported from Finale, I don’t have this problem. Please advise, file attached.

What's wrong with the picture below about this spacing? What else do you expect?

Greetings. Look at the last chord I entered, Bb7b9. On my mac, it looks like there a lot of extra space, (i.e. B b 7 b 9), ditto for the Bbmaj7, which appears as B b maj7, and C-7b5, which appears as C-7 b 5. Is it just my computer? I don't want any spaces.

Maybe jazz style would be better, but it doesn't matter, except perhaps from an aesthetic point of view. How do I convert the chord symbols to "jazz style?" Is this the best / only way of solving the problem of the extra space when importing .xml files from Finale? Thanks for your assistance.

Thanks, that removes the unwanted spaces. I'm curious though: when I create a file in MuseScore, i.e. without importing it from Finale, I can just go ahead and enter the chord symbols as I want, without using the jazz font, and the bad spacing doesn't occur.

Right. But just between us, and for this score anyway, the Jazz Style is really much more appropriate and enjoyable than the standard style.
Nevertheless, I looked on GitHub, I don't see this kind of subject mentioned, but maybe I missed it, it's quite possible. Could you please attach the MusicXML file created by Finale?

Bad spacing on my Windows computer. New Times Roman seems to be the default for this score. Try this:

Open the Properties palette. (You might have to add it from the View tab) Select the first Bb chord symbol. Right click and scroll to Select. Select More. Check "Same subtype" and "same staff". then OK. This selects all the chord symbols. In the properties palette scroll down to Text. Select the down arrow and scroll to and select Edwin. This should respace the symbols. Then select the 3 dots above the down arrow an select "make this the default for this score".

"without using the jazz font, and the bad spacing doesn't occur."
Because the default font is different.

I just thought of that. And that's what you should always do when you import these xml files. Go to Format / Restore entire score to the default layout. Not only is the layout better, but it also resets the font (to the MuseScore default, Edwin).
