entering tablature with QWERTY keyboard.

It says in the Handbook: Press 0 to 9 to enter a fret mark from 0 to 9 on the current string.
However when I press a number it changes the rhythmic value. What am I missing? The only way I have been able to do this is enter all zeros, turn off note entry, and then go back and edit each zero.
