Rests in piano writing
I want to notate a spread chord in the piano accompaniment to a song I'm writing, but the system doesn't seem to allow me to do this. Is there a way of doing this. What I want is a semibreve (whole note) C in the bass clef left hand joined one beat later by a dotted minim (half note) G joined one beat later by a D etc.

You could do it the way you describe but each note would have to be in a separate voice and it would look messy. Like this
I would write the arpeggio and the final chord in voice 1 and then connect the arpeggio to the chord with ties like this.
That is a commonly used notation and a pianist will understand what is intended.
You may want to play around with tie and stem directions to make it look neat. Select the tie or note and use keyboard shortcut X to flip the direction.
