Using keyboard shortcut for "C" while in Input by Duration mode is doing the wrong octave

This may be user error but I can't figure out what I am doing wrong if so.

While in Input by Duration mode, when I press "C" on my keyboard, it puts the note at middle C (C4) rather than at the C in the middle of the treble clef (C5). This is the same for any note I press. Is there a way to make it select the higher octave by default?
