no audio & play panel available
Hi, I'm using musescore 0.9.3 on Ubuntu and I can't get any sound of it or even active the play panel. I don't know what to do, when I start musescore by terminal, the message is the following:
daniel@daniel-laptop:~$ mscore
Suspending PulseAudio
Alsa_driver: the interface doesn't support mmap-based access.
init ALSA audio driver failed
init ALSA driver failed
no audio driver
sequencer init failed
no valid pixmap /usr/share/mscore/wallpapers/paper3.png

I got exactly the same errors as reported above.
I am using ubuntu 8.10
I installed several extra alsa packages but hadnt tried the tip which eventually worked so dont know if they contributed, but suspect not.
I also installed the Fluid (R3) General MIDI SoundFont (GS) and (GM) packages and I gather these dealt with the documented issues for soundfont per above comment and thread reference
play still didnt operate after restart of program and even restart of system
Then I found the comment / thread below, and followed the info and that made the play plugin visible
and enabled the play / F11 option of the display menu and it makes sound

I am posting this because I dont notice any comment to indicate whether the info in the earlier comment in this thread solved the problem of this thread.
This forum isnt as effective as the launchpad tool used by ubuntu.
It may be just an exception where the initially posting person has just failed to give acknowledgement, or that they just gave up. Posting this comment in case anyone else finds this thread when trying to solve the error:

May I suggest to MuseScore team to try using Launchpad ?

Hi David, I can't answer on your problem but regarding Launchpad, what would be the benefits of using Launchpad compared to the current MuseScore infrastructure?

Regarding my suggestion about using launchpad -
There is better facility for anyone using an answer in a launchpad problem record to report with just a click that the solution offered fixed the problem, whereas the user in this style forum has to take the time to post a response.
Ideally, users would always do that so the next person who comes along (in this case me) can tell whether that solved the problem, or whether the problem still exists and is worth reporting their own case, or if it only partly solves the problem that there is still more work to do for a complete fix. This was the case for the majority of bugs I read when reporting errors with brasero application in ubuntu Linux.
We are all busy and have more to do than time to do it; I have no measures to prove if that facility increases the reporting of successful fixes, but from what I have seen in my use of the two different mechanisms so far, launchpad seems to get more updates for closure of problems and questions.
that would benefit the dev team too by reducing updates such as mine if the suggested answer does solve the problem, or makes it clearer if the problem still happens for the next person that there is a different problem.
Certainly some people will just give up and not update the problem report answer to say whether or not it solved the issue regardless of the bug tracking tool, but if its easier to just click on a button to report the success, I think that will catch cases that a forum doesnt, and from what I see of the launchpad bug reports, they do get benefit from that.
It could be that the development teams using launchpad just have more developers working on the problems and are benefiting from the greater resource pool. Dont know. Its just my opinion that Launchpad would give the benefits I mentioned.
