Basic Note Entry Problem
Hey guys, 2 things I'm trying to do in my first experimental composition. Note, my music theory is a little rusty, so I don't have the proper terminology, sorry.
1) How do you enter a note that holds for 5/16? 4/4 time signature, start the measure with a Quarter Note, want it to carry for an extra 1/16th before a run of 16th notes. Not sure how to do this, what the terminology is, or how to search for it in FAQs.
2) When entering several notes of a chord, how do you make some half notes, some quarter notes? I start the measure with a 3 note chord, but want one of those notes to take a step up after one beat. I can only figure out how to make 2 separate chords of half notes, which is not what I want.
Thanks for your help? Feel free to ask for further clarification if I didn't explain things properly.

Welcome!
He begins to have a look here:

and, in addition to the handbook, you will find some ideas here:
http://musescore.org/en/howto
1) you use a "tie", which is a curved line joining the quarter note to the 16th note.
2) look up "voices" in the manual.
1) Enter the quarter note, then tie it to a 16th note.
See:

2) For different durations, use voices:
