Beta 2 as zip/Install Problems
I am trying to install Beta 2 on my work computer, but the install starts, and than I get message that says "The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available. Insert the 'MuseScore' disk and click OK." When I click cancel, I get a message that says "The older version of MuseScore 2 cannot be removed. Contact your technical support group." I can unzip and run any nightly without a problem, so I was wondering if there was a zip version of Beta 2.

Which Windows are you on? Did you install beta 1 before?

I'm sorry, I'm on Windows XP, and yes, I installed Beta 1. I've gone through the uninstall control panel and tried to manually delete any leftover files, but no dice. I can't get Beta 2 to install.
If you're comfortable extracting a ZIP and running from that, no sense in going back to the Beta 2, then - just download a nightly. It's a couple dozen bug fixes better at least :-)

I guess that's fine. Any idea if the final version 2 will be available as a zip?
In reply to I guess that's fine. Any idea by newsome
I think it'll be an msi, like the betas, maybe an exe too, like 1.x, but most probably not a zip.
In reply to I think it'll be an msi, like by Jojo-Schmitz
It will be an msi indeed and not a zip. That's why it's interesting to try to fix the initial problem. I'm really intrigued by it. I have received a similar report only once before via email, but I haven't been able to reproduce it.

I'd be more than happy to help sniff out the problem, but it will have to be Monday when I go back to work. I definitely don't want to have to always depend on nightlies.
I am experiencing problems installing from MuseScore-2.0-beta2.msi onto our school network.
Getting this message:
The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. Click OK to try again, or enter an alternative path to a folder containing the installation package 'MuseScore-2.0beta1.msi' in the box below.
I've even moved the file onto the local hard disk and renamed it from 'MuseScore-2.0-beta2.msi' to
'MuseScore-2.0beta1.msi'.
Getting this message at the end:
The older version of MuseScore 2 cannot be removed. Contact your technical support group.

Also on Windows XP, like newsome?
Anyway, the Beta may really be suitable for the school network... but if it is, the nightlies would too, wouldn't they?

...forgot to say:
Even after moving to local hard disk and renaming I still get the message:
The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. Click OK to try again, or enter an alternative path to a folder containing the installation package 'MuseScore-2.0beta1.msi' in the box below.

Maybe MuseScore needs internet access during install for some reason? Do these machines have internet access?
In reply to We are using Windows7 SP1 by Andrew Ryland
I'll try the nightlies tomorrow! Thanks.
In reply to I'll try the nightlies by Andrew Ryland
Yes, networked computers have access to the internet - through a proxy-server.
I was thinking that there may be some script in the msi-file (referring to beta 1) that needed updating! ;-)
In reply to I'll try the nightlies by Andrew Ryland
@Andrew there is no .msi package available of the nightly build so that won't work.
In reply to @Andrew there is no .msi by Thomas
and they don't require any install either, just unpack...
@newsome did you manage to install the 2.0 Release Candidate or did it return the same error?
In reply to @newsome did you manage to by Thomas
Unfortunately no. In the middle of the installation I still received a message that said "The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available. Insert the 'MuseScore' disk and click OK." Of course there is no MuseScore disk, so I click cancel, and I get a message that says "The older version of MuseScore 2 cannot be removed. Contact your technical support group."
I am on Windows XP, and I downloaded a fresh version of the MuseScore 2 Release Candidate this morning. The nightlies that are packaged as .7z files unpack and run fine.

Do you have a previous MSI version installed? Beta 1, Beta2 ?
In reply to Do you have a previous MSI by [DELETED] 5
I don't think so, only nightlies. How would I know? I looked in the Program Files folder, and there was only one folder labeled "MuseScore", and it had 1.3 in it. If I recall correctly, on my home computer there are 2 folders, one labeled "MuseScore" and one labeled "MuseScore 2". To the best of my recollection, I haven't been able to get any of the RCs that are packaged as .msi files to install.

Ok. So if I understand correctly, the installation works at home but not at your workplace(?). Is there anything special about this computer?

Hi all,
Here are my two cents.
In my case I had the same problem during installation. This is how I solved it.
If you open a Console (but with administration rights - by right-clicking on the console icon after you have searched for it), and then you run the installer it works for me flawlesly.
My guess is that the installer should ask for administration rights but it doesn't, so executing the installer from a console with administration rights solves the problem.
Best,
Bardico
I've been using the nightlies, but I tried to install the official 2.0 release this morning and got the same problem. I noticed that when it got to the point where it asked for me to insert the MuseScore disk and click OK, I clicked the Browse button and discovered that it was looking for a file called "MuseScore-2.0beta1.msi". Obviously I deleted that file a while ago, but I went to the website, found a beta file, renamed it to exactly what the installer was looking for, and tried to open it. Didn't work and I wound up with the same problem.
This is a school computer with a pretty strict firewall. The only thing I can think of is that the installer is trying to download something that's blocked by the firewall(?).
Oh, and bardico, I couldn't find the "Console", but I opened the "Run" dialogue and tried to install it from there with the same results.

Looking back at the comments above mine, it seems there was something in Beta1 that's causing this problem.

Hi newsome,
You can use this tutorial to open the console with administration rights (elevated):

I've just had the same problem with version 2.0 RC (on win7).
On my second PC, I had installed the Version 2.0-RC. Then deleted the msi file after installation.
Today, I wanted to install the official 2.0 but it was impossible t because the installer-2.0 was not able to uninstall first the version 2.0-rc, because The feature you are trying to use is [...] is not available, please provide MuseScore-2.0-RC.msi. I was stuck.
It was then a bit complicated because the msi for 2.0-RC is not available anymore on the musescore website. Luckily, I could find it on my other PC. Coping it back to the original location on my local HD and I could unintall.
So Andrew, it has nothing to do with network/firewall, it seems for some baffling reasons, the deinstaller needed the original msi file (and it's pointless to try to copy/rename another msi file, it's not the wanted version).
But there is something wrong here. Why would I have to keep the msi to uninstall???
In reply to I've just had the same by yves.925
Thank you for sharing your experience with us Yves. Clearly this is not supposed to happen and we are as puzzled as you on why this happens. We haven't found the root cause of this issue yet we might need more eyeballs to fix this issue.
Thanks for your posting, yves.925. I appreciate you giving a very clear explanation.
I'm still having the same problem with Musescore 2.0.1 on Win7 SP1 needing Musescore 2.0 Beta 1.
Thomas, I was wondering (as a work around) if you could send me a link to the Beta 1 msi to see if having the file would enable me to install on the school network? I understand that this is not ideal.
Many thanks for all your help.
In reply to Thanks for your posting, by Andrew Ryland
You can get beta1 here ftp://ftp.osuosl.org/pub/musescore/windows/
But it's indeed not ideal. I don't see why it is needed. Please let us know how it works out.
Thanks for the link, lasconic.
I was able to run the latest msi - which previously got stuck looking for the beta 1 msi. But there were no files within the Program Files/Musescore 2 folder after it was successful! Perhaps it was just removing files while I thought it was installing.
I decided to shutdown my computer. Started up again.
I attempted another installation from the latest msi - this time successfully!
Musescore 2 is installed on my computer! Hooray!
Need to prepare for installation on the school network next.
Thanks for all your help.
Great program!
In reply to Thanks for the link, by Andrew Ryland
Can you explain what you did exactly? the latest MSI asked you for a path to the beta1? or it just finds it next to it?
I downloaded the beta 1 msi to a folder I had created in Documents called 'downloads'.
Downloaded the latest msi to the same folder.
Ran the latest msi without being asked for the beta 1 msi file.
