Opening a document
Hi,
Are there any techies out there who can help me? My friend has emailed me with a couple of pieces attached. I have downloaded these onto my computer ok but it doesn't seem to recognise the MuseScore program and open the docs. Each time I try I get a message "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in Set Associations control panel". Does anyone know what I should be doing? Have I missed something when I installed the program?

What extension do these files have? What MuseScore version, which operating sytem?
In Windows MuseScore should have registered itself on installation to open mscz and mscx files.
Can you open them from within MuseScore, i.e. File → Open, rather than via doubleclick?
Can you attach one of them here?

The extensions are MSCZ. MuseScore version 1.3. Its a Dell 32 bit operating system. No, I can't see the documents through MuseScore, I have to find them via C:Drive/Users etc.
I have tried to attach them but it doesn't work. I can copy them but not paste them here. I can attach them to an email.
Could MuseScore not have registered itself - how could I tell?

I assume 'Dell 32bit operating system' to mean Windows... XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1? Shouldn't make mich oft a diffence here though...
In MuseScore you'd need to brwose to the directory where you saved they files, just like in explorer too.
In Explorer you could use right click, open with and then select MuseScore, may need to browse to C:\Program Files\MuseScore\bin and select mscore.exe.
Or reinstall MuseScore.
Attaching something here works via that "File attachments" link at the bottom oft the dialog you see when replying to a post.

Hi again.
I followed your instructions but there isn't an option under /bin for mscore.exe. Just iconengines and imageformats.
I have tried reinstalling MuseScore 1.3 and have registered myself ok but nothing has changed. Still have the problem.
Its a real shame as my friend and I wanted to exchange music and songs but it doesn't look as if we will be able.

In C:\Program Files (x86)\MuseScore\bin (on a 64-bit Windows) or C:\Program File\MuseScore\bin (on a 32bit Wondows you should see 2 directotories (like you do), a couple of dll files and mscore.exe.

I'm going to guess the problem is simple - your friend sent you the wrong file. They probably sent the back file - name ending with comma (".msz," - rather than the actual file (".mscz"). That would explain why you are getitng an error about file associations. Have them send you the correct file and I'll bet all will be well.
Although it's easy enough to test this theory - just create a score yourself, save it, see what happens when you double click it in Explorer (be sure you don't make the same mistake of using the backup file!)

oh, yes, I've completely forgotten about that, might also explain why she doesn't see an mscore.exe, if known extensions are set to invisible, this idiotic Windows default.

Yes, there is a comma at the end of the file name. I have asked my friend to try to send the actual file. I'll let you know how we get on.

You could also rename the comma away, see http://musescore.org/en/node/20367. Also you should probably follow the hints there on "How to see hidden files in Windows" and "How to show file extensions in Windows"
But then you'd be using an older version of your friend's score...

Hi Everyone
Just wanted to let you know that the comma at the end of the file name was the problem. My friend had inadvertently sent back files. So now I have the latest files everything works fine.
