- take the attached score:
- select the measure or use Ctrl+A
- click in "Auto" in the Beam properties palette
I'd think that for a rest 'Auto' should mean 'No beam', apparently it does not?

marked #99761: Unnecessary beams over rests as a duplicate
I will argue that your issue here should really be a "feature request". I'm titling this according to what you say at the end of your description "I'd think that for a rest 'Auto' should mean 'No beam"
I agree with that quote. Which means I support this *feature request*. :)

Hmm. I understand it as "I'd think that for a rest 'Auto' should mean and should always have meant 'No beam' " —and I agree with that.
Let me be a little clearer: If a rest is set to the beam setting "AUTO", then that rest should not beam.
(Note: there is a seperate beam setting "No Beam")
Actually, if my feature request #100111: stemlet (stems over rests) will be implemented, then I need to carefully plan how AUTO stemming behaves for rests, depending on the ui for stemlets. I suppose if there is a global stemlet toggle, then if it is engaged I would want beams over rests which were set to auto to obey the time signature beaming definition. But maybe the ui would allow individual rests to selectively toggle stemlets, in which case I would want AUTO for a rest with stemlet toggled to beam according to time signature. Regardless, auto beam for a rest without stemlets enabled should not beam.
Don't forget Layout > Reset Beam Mode. This is an entirely different function from Auto beaming.
I made a note in #100111: stemlet (stems over rests) about considering "Reset Beam Mode". Note that "Reset beam mode" currently sets rests to "No beam" setting.

It does not cater for stemlets though, and can't, as they have not yet been implemented...
