Error in Windows XP when double clicking directly on a musescore file to open it
I get two error dialog boxes in succession when double clicking directly on a musescore file to open it; after clicking OK, to both dialog boxes the file fails to load. However, opening the file from Musescore's open menu poses no problem.
1st error: Error reading file ... at line 1 column 1: error occurred while parsing element
2nd error: Lecture du fichier ... failed: No error
Using Musescore 0.9.6.2 revision 3361 (the latest prerelease) under Windows XP

Do you experiment the same issue with a particular file only or all the files?
If it's only one file, can you attach it ?
In reply to Do you experiment the same by [DELETED] 5
This happens with any .mcsz (Musescore compressed) file. Interestingly enough, if I save it as a Music XML file Musescore will load the file directly from the folder with no problems.
I thought this was a long filename issue, because when I load up Musescore first, and then double click on the file that I saved on my desktop (say), I'll only get the first error dialog box. Then there will be a tab for the file named something like FILENA~2 but no file. So then I tried naming a musescore file test.mcs and then double-clicking it but Musescore still wouldn't load it.
If I remember correctly, I think this error happens in Vista as well.

I can't reproduce on Vista or Windows XP. Do you use special character in your username ? Is your XP in english or another language? Can you try with a MSCX file?
In reply to I can't reproduce on Vista or by [DELETED] 5
That's odd. I've managed to reproduce this error on 2 XP computers. One of my usernames has the '&' character; the other doesn't. I'll save a MSCZ file, close Musescore, then attempt to open the file by double clicking on it. I'll get those two errors.
Loading a MSCX file works perfectly fine. However, if I click the 'save' icon, it will save as FILENA~1.mscz .

Yes, I am having same error when MuseScore file is opened with Windows XP. This problem does not happen with my Vista machine.
I had posted the same query on discussion forum as I was not able to locate people with similar problem until someone here at pointed me to this posting.

After experimenting around a little I found that I could load up some MSCZ files from the root directories on my computer but not when the directory name exceeds a certain length. For example I keep my scores in C:\Documents and Settings\User&\My Documents\Scores\ and loading them from this directory leads to this error.
In reply to directory name length seems to be the problem by brettvachon
This looks like very specific to XP since I can't reproduce in any way on Vista. Tested with mscz/mscx, directory name with & and space in there, pretty long directory structure. We'll need someone to perform the same actions on XP to at least reproduce the problems. Thanks for reporting so far!

Are you using a special filesystem on XP ? NTFS or FAT32 ? Do you have any special settings for long filenames?
In reply to Are you using a special by [DELETED] 5
I actually use one XP computer with the NTFS file system and another with FAT32 and this error occurs on both of them. The file system doesn't seem to make a difference. How can I check the special settings for long filenames?
In reply to I actually use one XP by brettvachon
I tried something else. If I open the command prompt and type C:\>"C:\Program Files\MuseScore\bin\mscore.exe" "C:\Documents and Settings\User&\My Documents\Scores\filename.mscz" the file loads without a problem.
I'm just wondering if there was any solution to this problem as I've come across it on my XP pc. The only way I can open files is to go on the file menu at the top and access them from there. This worked fine until I lost one and tried to access it from my folder. The error messages described came up, and even with an XML document all I get is the description on the web. These errors also happen if I try to open an attachment from the forum.(I have to save it and open it from the file menu.) I'd appreciate some advice as I don't want to lose any more! By the way I'm using the new super edition and the files I'm trying to open are MSCZ.

What version of MuseScore are you using? What web browser are you using?

In reply to What version of MuseScore are by David Bolton
Hi David, just to let you know I'm using the new edition (0.9.6.3) which I downloaded the other day. I didn't even realise it was possible to double click to open these files (although I'd tried and failed) until I read these comments. I tried the first article on the link you provided, and everything seemed ok as the "open with" box was already on Musescore. I mucked about a bit but nothing made any difference. I'll try the rest and see if they give me any ideas. I just tried using another pc. (also XP), installing Musescore, saving a d flat scale and seeing what happened. When I double-clicked on the scale the error message came up (only one this time) and the tab appeared with KEYDFL~1 on it, but no score. Don't know if this gives you any hints.

Normally installation should set up the file associations for you so that you can double click on a MuseScore file and it opens in MuseScore. In windows explorer do the .mscz files have the MuseScore icon ("mu")?
Can you attach the file you are having difficulty with? Does the file have a .mscz or .mscx file extension?
In reply to Normally installation should by David Bolton
I'm having the problem opening every file in my folder except when I access it by using file-open (or open recent) and selecting it from there. Here is one file it happens on.
In reply to XP problem by BobCampbell
The file opens okay on my computer (MuseScore 0.9.6.3, Windows XP). In Windows Explorer do your MuseScore files have the MuseScore icon on them ("mu")?
In reply to The file opens okay on my by David Bolton
All the files in my Musescore folder have the MU on them. Some have MSCZ, File, some have Compressed MuseScore File on them written under the file name. I re-installed Musescore, but without much hope as it didn't work on version 0.9.6.2 either.

Maybe you can see if a debug build tells us anything. See How to use a debug version of MuseScore
In reply to Maybe you can see if a debug by David Bolton
I ran the debug build as suggested, then tried to open a folder directly from "my documents" but got the same error message. I've attached the results which appeared in the debug box.
In reply to Command prompt result by BobCampbell
I didn't think of this before, but I guess you would need right click on the file in your documents and use "Open With..." and browse for the debug version of MuseScore. Otherwise it will probably just do its normal thing (try to open in the normal version of MuseScore)
In reply to I didn't think of this by David Bolton
I am also getting this error. To reproduce the error, in my folder of musescore files, if I would double-click on a musescore file, i would also get the error stated by other users. But other ways of opening the file, works fine.
Error reading file
at line 1 column: error occured while parsing element
failed: No error
I am using version 0.9.6.3 on XP.
More power to you guys and thank you for this wonderful software.
In reply to I didn't think of this by David Bolton
Did as you suggested - opened debug version (0.9.7), startup command window came up (1st attachment), main window opened. Selected musescore file at random, opened with 'run debug', another command window came up (2nd attachment) pressed 'file>quit', both command windows remained.
In reply to Result of next try by BobCampbell
In the "Open With..." window did you choose
C:\Documents and Settings\Bob\My Documents\Downloads\mscore-debug\mscore-debug\bin\mscore.exe
? It looks like you choose something inC:\Documents and Settings\Bob\My Documents\Musescore
instead? In reply to In the "Open With..." window by David Bolton
I have now used the path given above. On trying to open a file using this path, I now get the error message about 'error occurred while parsing element'. which I didn't get last time so hopefully this one's right. Command box printout is attached. When I clear the error message, the screen has guitar~3 on the tab, but nothing on the screen. On clicking 'File>Quit' the readout is attachment 2. Best of luck!
In reply to New Path by BobCampbell
Is your first document from immediately after you open the guitar score or from before you have opened the score?
In reply to Is your first document from by David Bolton
The first document was from opening debug to opening the score, the second was after I'd closed the main window and only the command box was left. I've done the whole thing again with single attachment (started debug version - tried to open file from given path - got error message - cancelled error message - file>close - saved command box message). All info. from start to finish should be in the attachment.
In reply to First Document by BobCampbell
I thought that if I opened a file on the debug version using file>open instead of trying to double-click from the musescore file in 'my documents' it might have a different file path on it, so I ran debug, opened the file my usual way through file>open, and up it popped. I saved the command box details and have attached them just in case it's any help.

People with this error. Can you confirm that you are using Windows XP SP2 ?

Yep. Using SP2.
I'm worndering if the way my disc is partitioned has anything to do with this error? I installed Musescore on a computer at work and I couldn't duplicate this bug. But I did some partition work with BootitNG before installing XP on my computer.

Yes, I'm using SP2 on both of the pcs I tried this on. Will install SP3 and see if anything interesting happens.

Just to let you all know that installing Service Pack 3 solved the problem for me. Thanks for the help.

It looks like a bug in Qt 4.6 with Windows XP Sp2. It seems to be solved by Qt4.7 and Windows XP Sp3.
