Lyric notes
How can you modify the music stave for singing parts so that the stems of 8th and 16th notes do not automatically connect?
Also, new to musescore here, is it unwise to input a whole opera on one file? would it crash or be bogged down? thanks

If you want a particular staff to default to no beam, right click its time signature, Time Signature Properties, and set the default beaming there. Or, you can override beaming for individual cases - including entire selections - using the Beam Properties dialog. See the Handbook under "Time Signature" and "Beam".
I would indeed recommend against putting an entire opera in a single file. Performance degrades with size of score. MuseScore provides an "Album" feature (again, see appropriate section of Handbook) to join separate acts / scenes / movements into a complete score when you are done.
