Notation: 3/4 during 4/4?

Hi Musescore forum
I'm fairly new at writing music and I've started to venture into classical (That's what it sounds closest to, to me, at least).
I've run into a problem, writing this one;
I want to have violins playing 3/4, but during a 4/4 part.
What I mean is, having the violins play one note per beat, as if they were playing 3/4, except it's 4/4.
Would I have to use triplets or is there something easier as it is a whole bar..?
If I'm not being clear, I can try to explain further.
Thanks and happy new year :)

If you mean the violins are just playing quarter notes something like this:

C C C D D D E E E F F F

where the three C's take a total of three beats just like normal quarter notes, then the answer is, you shouldn't do anything special to notate this. Just leave it in 4/4 and place the notes, so it will be like this:

C C C D | D D E E | E F F F |

If on the other hand you mean the three C's should take *four* beats, then it is indeed a triplet. While in note input mode, select the whole note icon for the total duration of the tuplet, then press Ctrl+3 to divide it into thirds.
