Crescendo on long note
i would like playback of long held notes to get louder. I'm confused how to do this.

That looks correct. Assuming you are using a soundfont and an instrument capable of reproducing this, and you attached actual dynamic markings as opposed to just text on the crescendo, it should playback correctly in any recent version of MuseScore. If you are finding otherwise, please attach your actual score as opposed to just a picture, so we can understand and assist better.

Thanks for the offer of help. I'm not sure what a soundfont is (I don't recall installing anything). See score attached. An example is measure 223. Would like violin 1, 2, viola, cello bass cresc, but I'm not hearing it on playback.

Hold on... I have "Nice-Strings Plus Orchestra v1.6.sf2" installed.

You need to open the synthesizer (menu View->Synthesizer) select the Dynamics tab and select the Dynamics method of "CC events only, (constant velocity)" and CC to use: "CC11" this will allow single note dynamics to work with your sound font if you haven't done anything else to prevent single note dynamics from working.
