The program is rather complex. It's advisable to read through the manual once so you can at least have an idea of what you can do. I realize it's about 250 pages, but there are plenty of illustrations so it's not as long as it sounds.
But note, the play panel is only for temporary overrides to the actual tempo, like if you want to slow a piece down to practice along with it. To set the actual tempo, you use Tmepo text from the palette. See the Handbook under Tempo for more info.
