[SOLVED] When should be a volta bracket open and when closed
Hello,
is there a definition for when a volta should be closed and when it should be open? Is the last volta always open regardless if it's on the last measure/bar of a whole piece?

It's not universally followed, but the usual convention is close the volta for all but the last - to help make clear where it actually ends (normally right on the end repeat barline). The last one is left open to signify that it doesn't actually end, you just keep going forward.

Even if it is on the last bar/measure of the whole piece or on a bar/measure with a final bar?

In that case, it does end, so yeah, close it. I was thinking more of second endings in the middle of a piece, such as in an AABA for where the first A section is written with a repeat.

Can you explicate your example, please? I don't really know, what you mean by that in terms of voltas.

I am formatting my scores and stumbled uppon the following, as seen in the attachment. The piece starts in the very first bar with the first volta. I learned that the last volta shouldn't be closed. But if I don't use a closed volta, Musescore stops the playback on the end of the first volta. Is that intended to happen?

There's an end repeat barline missing. Voltats are alternetive endings of a repeat

But when I put a repeat barline on the last bar of the first volta, then the second volta gets played after that, but the second volta should only play, after the end of the piece is reached.
Edit: And the speed resets, when the second volta is played, when I place the repeat barline in the first volta.

So you're mis-using voltas for an alternate start of a repeat.
Just move the measures covered by the 2nd volta to the end, before the repeat barline, remove the repeat barlines, add a Segno to the measure after the 1st volta, remove the volta lines, and replace the end repeat by a D.S.

I did as you told and added Fine and D.S. al Fine, because I don't want to end on the previously second volta. But then another questions comes to my mind: Is the endbarline on Fine a legal barline or should I remove it with e.g. a double bar line?

Indeed I'd put an end barline at the fine and a single or double barline at the end

You didn't, but I explained why I used them. Because, if I would do it exactly as you told, the ending wouldn't fit well. So that's why I used Fine and D.S. al Fine to have a proper end and my new question, that came up, is if the endbarline is a proper barline on Fine.

Ah, and I thought about placing a doublebar line on the Segno, but you did it already. Good to know! That helped alot! Thank you very much!

Yes, sorry, I noticed the need of a Fine after the fact.
It is of course perfectly OK to not blindly follow any advice, but engaging the brain in the process ;-)
