i was trying to delete measures 52-59.
I don't know what is factory settings, etc.

Measure 52 is the one that is longer than 4/4, right? Why?

you asked me to share it; is the post sufficient for that purpose. i hope to hear from someone before tryig factory settings and possibly messing things up.

i have not heard from you or anyone after this after posting it. i am hesitant to try this.
what happens after i go to factory settings? Does that just restart the musesccore program/ does it eliminate the problem? this is important so please explicate fully.
is there a reason for it not working or some other way to resolve this?

Did you try @jeetee's proposal below?

his suggestion was for the diacritics, not for deletion problem. yess, i followed it and it solved the problem. it had nothing to do with fonts but with the location in musescore of the disacritic marks.

i see now he has a suggestion for the deletion problem. i did not see this before. i will invesitage.

i just saw his proposal and will investigate.
Does it work to use the menu instead of the shortcut?
Select the measure, then use
Tools → Remove Selected Range
If that works, then you may have an issue with your shortcuts. Note that the menu entry shows the currently configured shortcut on the right side of the entry.

Thank you for the suggestion.
i just selected and tried Tools >>>Remove selected range; unfortunately it does not work.
What next?
In reply to Thank you for the suggestion… by Philip Ellis Foster
i also tried it on some other measures and it din't work there either so it is not specific to the measures mentioned above.

I had the same problem a few days ago. And I experienced this in new night / beta versions.
Moreover, the area I wanted to delete was the normal measures, following the measures split in half.
I selected the measures I wanted to delete and several times applied Ctrl + Del but failed. I applied the "Remove selected area" command from the menu, it didn't. (and delete options in the right-click menu was gray / non-clickable).
As a last resort: I combined the splitted measures. And only this way I managed to delete the next measures.
I think this is a bug related to splitted measures. (Or more accurately: it is related to measures that are outside the normal time signature setting (with excessive or missing strokes)).
After correcting the document, I wanted to write an error report. But I couldn't find under what conditions this problem occurred (now that I have little time to devote to this problem).

thanks very much. i'm glad its not me that screwed up. i guess i have the same problem because of the measure with the plus sign. i think someone said above that it appeared because i didn't have the right number of notes in the measure. i posted the score at https://musescore.com/user/22400121/scores/6203266 where you can see at measure 52 what i have been talking about.
So maybe someone can tell me how to do what you did so that i can get rid of the unwanted measures and continue to work on my piece.
Many thanks.

Maybe this is an old version problem, it may have been corrected in the new beta.
Or there may be a specific problem occurring during the session (ie: An unfamiliar bug that occurred as a result of the commands we applied consecutively during the session).

As I said before: Perhaps this problem occurs after some successive operations and commands. Sometimes it is not possible to create the same problem again. Maybe a bug that has been fixed. Maybe an undiscovered side effect.

i think this problem started at the same time that the plus sign appeared above measure 52 and the vertical mark in the measure. Is there someway to remove those marks and maybe it will fix the problem. i don't know what i did to cause them but possibly i hit a wrong key somewhere.

The + and - signs are there to tell you the measure has more or fewer beats than the time signature says it should. If you didn't do that on purpose, my best guess is you tried to use Ctrl+Delete on an individual note or test or barline, which would have exactly this effect.

thanks for clarifying.
For what it's worth, I also encountered this situation in one score. I could insert or append measures, but I could not delete them via ctrl-del or the menu option. I could get rid of the added measures via undo, however. Saving, exiting, and re-editing removed the problem, and everything went back to normal. There is presumably some anomalous data condition that can occur during editing, but it fortunately is cleared by restarting the program, i.e. it is not a property of a broken score. If I am ever able to produce a repeatable case I will submit a ticket about it.

What version of MuseScore? I recently fixed an issue that was is not in any actual released version but is in the 3.5 alpha and beta and any nightly builds from that time. See #307428: Cannot remove selected range after right-click of non-range

I experienced the problem as well on v. 3.6 (OSX Sierra). Could not delete any measure with Cmd+Del trying the above suggestions. I saved the file, closed and then reopened and was then able to delete the measures.
Could not reproduce but if I do I will update on what conditions caused it. I was working on an imported xml file from Sibelius and noticed I couldn't delete after several text edits & barline stretches were done (didn't import the grand staff).

We get just enough of these reports that I have no trouble believing there is indeed a bug where this command disables itself somehow. We fixed such a bug a year or so ago - in that case, it would disable for the rest of the session, , I think, if you tried using the right-click (aka "context" - Ctrl+click for systems with no right button) menu for this. Since that fix then I haven't been able to reproduce any further problems. But having worked on that part of the code a little, again, I have no trouble believe there might be some other sequence of actions that can cause this, and we'd love to find out what it is!
Most of the people who have reported this are on macOS, and I have only WIndows and Linux systems, which may explain why I haven't been able to reproduce it. It could somehow be a macOS-only issue.

Glad you finally thing it could be the system, not me. i had the problem on Windows.

FWIW, no one has ever doubted this problem exists. However, when you reported you saw a minus sign above a measure, that's a sure sign you hadn't selected the full measure, but instead probably only clicked a single note or rest. In that case, Ctrl+Delete will remove just the beat(s) represented by that note. This is a pretty common mistake., so something to keep in mind also.
I had the same problem. When I clicked off the "Note Input" icon (upper left corner), Ctrl + Del worked.
18 months later, I have the same problem, using Mac O/S Big Sur, Musescore version 3.6.2.548…

So far no one has figured out how to reproduce the problem - it just sort of randomyl happens to a very small percentage of Mac users on rare occasions. But as far as we know, it always fixes itself if you simply start MuseScore.

FWIW, although I haven't seen the problem recently, my past encounters were under Windows.

There was a problem in the past indeed that could happen on Windows, I think in 3.3 or 3.4, but that problem was quickly fixed in the next update. I am not aware of any reports of problems with the current version on any system but macOS.

Ah, thank you, my mistake. How curious that the symptom persists on macOS, presumably from a different cause.
In reply to Ah, thank you, my mistake… by spinality
Definitely a different cause when it comes to specifics since the origin problem affected all systems and was always reproducible following the same steps. It had to do with a conflict between two different versions of the same command - one coming from the context (right-click) menu, the other in the Tools menu. That specific conflict was fixed, but I can believe that another still exists but is dependent on some very specific order of operations that causes the command to become disabled. I can't provide it would only be possible on macOS, but the handful of reports of this have all been on macOS which makes only a small of all users, so I have to believe it's not coincidence.

It happened to me. Cmd+Back key (MacBook Air M1, Big Sur) didn't work. After quitting an restarting Musescore it worked again.

FWIW, it has also happened again to me once under Windows 10, using current versions of MS and Windows. Unfortunately I have no additional clues. I had been copying and pasting different voices, and transposing voices, and had been working through various bits and pieces on the clipboard. As with Pedro, the problem was resolved by restarting MuseScore.
Well folks, I believe I have found the solution. A bug for sure. The issue is with Timelime. When it is showing (F12), the system glitches and shuts down when I try to remove measures. When Musescore glitches and shuts down, the configuration I was using on Timeline also resets.
Inversely, when I turn off Timeline (F12), I am capable of removing measures from the score without any issues. Yay! I hope this helps anyone else looking for a solution.

Save the file.
Exit.
And Open Musescore again.
I happen to have the same problem when I imported a midi file with two instruments, delete one instrument and try to delete measures using Ctrl+Del. It doesn't work.
However, when i delete the measures before deleting instruments, Ctrl+Del worked fine.

There's a known bug where Ctrl+Delete gets disabled if you accidentally press Ctri+I at any point other than while editing text, where this is the supported shortcut for italics. Try pressing Ctrl+I again to fix it, and then try to avoid pressing it again.

Haha, had the same problem in MuseScore4. This solution worked for me. Only difference is in MuseScore 4, Ctrl + I no-longer changes text, but I keep doing it out of habit.
