Staff type - need unpitched vocal notation
Hello everyone :)
I am writing in SATB and want to add in some finger clicks and other things. Since these are very ad lib and I want to express the random nature of them, I want to have a blank staff into which I can write in the unpitched information. I will include things such as hairpins and stop and start points so I need a staff really. Any idea how I can do that please?
Many thanks
Lorna

Use a normal staff and notes and change them to "x" noteheads.

Hi Jojo,
Thanks for answering again :)
I do that for pieces where I have a few clicks here and there - but the whole choir clicking randomly can't be notated - and I want it random so notation is too rigid. I just want to express it in words plus dynamic instruction. Do you know what I mean?

I've done a quick drawing and attached a pic. Hopefully this explains better. It's kind of like Eric Whitacre style.

Those still look like ordinary quarter notes to me. Just put the number of them you want in the bar, and either hide any remaining rests or delete the beats (eg, Ctrl+Delete). Or is there some other specific aspect of the notation you are not sure how to enter? Can you attach your score as you have it so far and explain which specific notation you are having trouble with?

Hi Marc,
I haven't written the click instructions into MuseScore yet because I don't know how to do it. The quarter notes in my sketch just represent the bass part so you can see that below the bass I want to add in another stave where I want to get the choir to fingerclick like raindrops. It needs to be a stave because I want hairpins and dynamics attached to the clicks and other noises as the score progresses. I don't want to notate them individually with crosses or other note heads because 'random' can't be notated like that. So, I need a blank stave I think that I can write instructions into the middle of and add dynamics and hairpins to. Does that make more sense?

Hi Marc and Jojo,
I've decided to just insert the finger snap stave and use the text option. That way I can use the hairpins and dynamics. No worries.. thanks :)

Oh, so it’s not the notes you are struggling with, but the blank staff? That’s easy, just add a staff and mark the rests invisible. You can also hide barlines etc if desired, or set them to not display at all in staff/part properties. You can add your text and other markings to that staff just as with any other staff.

thanks so much Marc, I've done that :)
