Playback Sound Timing Issue
Whereas earlier when I play back scores, the sound playback matches well the notes being played and "pinked" during a particular measure -- I have noticed that over the past couple of days most of the scores I play will have the sound playing up to one full measure ahead of the notation "pinking". I have tried restarting my computer (Mac OS Big Sur 11.6.2) and restarting Musescore etc. but to no avail. I appreciate suggestions as to how to get the scores to play correctly so that sound output matches notes being played.

pinking on .com? If you have not modified it the playback cursor should be blue on the installed software.

What I meant is that when one uses Musescore to playback a file, the software highlights the measure being played in a reddish-pink color and continues moving forward measure by measure as the playback continues. For some reason now, when I playback a file, the highlighting of the measure is typically ahead of the actual notes being played.

On dotcom, scores highlight measure by measure in reddish-pink
For example:

Opening, then playing this:
Opus_27_No_2_Moonlight_Sonata_1st_movement.mscz
in the MuseScore music notation program will highlight note by note in blue.

Perhaps I did not explain it well -- it's not the question of the COLOR of the measure being played, either of .com version (on web) vs. the app version. The issue is the TIMING of when the highlight appears during playback. It used during playback the highlighted measure would appear in strict time to the playback, but now I often see the highlighting during playback either happening too slow to the real time of the measure being played, or sometimes as much as a whole measure faster than playback.

Yes, but are you playing a MuseScore (.mscz) file using the MuseScore program installed on your computer, or are you watching the playback (in your web browser) over at musescore.com?
There's a difference.
Open this in the MuseScore notation app:
Opus_27_No_2_Moonlight_Sonata_1st_movement.mscz
Is the "TIMING of when the highlight appears during playback" satisfactory?

The mistiming of the playback is happening BOTH when I play a file on the APP and when I play even the same file on the .com version.

If by "app" you mean one of the mobile apps (for iOS or Android), those are supported on musescore.com, so you'd have to ask over there on that site.
If you mean the actual notation software for your computer, then please attach your score and give precise steps to reproduce the problem. Then we can understand and assist better.

I've attached an example score. It happens whether one uses playback employing a browser (in my case Safari), hence the website version at "musescore.com" or (as is also true in my case) the OS X for Mac application. Whether playing a score back by means of the website or employing the version (for OS X on my Mac laptop) it's the same problem -- whereas all up until now the scores would playback with the highlighted measure precisely matching the playback, now there's a significant either delay, or the highlighted measure during playback is ahead of the playback through my computer speakers. Thanks in advance for your help.

I have downloaded your file and loaded it into MuseScore. I'm listening to it now, and not encountering any issues. But I also note the music abruptly stops after bar 43, maybe there is a longer version with problems? Is there a re particular measure where you feel the playback isn't matching the cursor, or something special I need to do in order to reproduce the issue?
We might be able to understand and assist better if you attach a link to a screen recording showing the issue (again, using MuseScore on your computer - website and mobile app issues are not anything we can help with here).
One thing to consider - if your speakers are connected by Bluetooth or something other than direct wired connection, that probably explains it right there.

Dear Marc -- I deeply appreciate your incredible kindness in looking into this issue. It's entirely strange to me that the file I tried to send you ended up apparently being quite corrupted as when I sent it from my computer was intact and whole. Since your kind response I have gone back and tried to reproduce the issue again using different files and it now seems for some reason to have resolved itself (?). If I see it occurring again -- I will take more detailed steps to give you as much information etc. as I can through screenshots or perhaps even a recording. In the meantime after attempting several times to reproduce the issue it's now okay. Again I deeply thank you for your help and concern. You have assisted me too in the past on other issues and your great knowledge of Musescore is so incredibly helpful. Again thank you! Daniel Bradford

Earlier you mentioned the reddish-pink color. That is a clue that you might mean the "pinking" of the measures during playback over at musescore.com:.

Yes and what I meant is that the reddish-pink highlighting of the measures during playback does NOT coincide properly with the actual timing of the playback.
