How does one assign triplet to a grouping of 3 notes? Nothing I try seems to work.

If the notes are already in your score, you cannot change them to triplets. You need to select the duration you want (quarter note for eighth note triplets, etc.) and then press ctrl+3/cmd+3 to add the triplet. See https://musescore.org/en/handbook/3/tuplets

Thanks for your help, much appreciated! I was selecting the notes and then pressing ctrl+3 and rests were being added into the mix.
