Make a line have one more measure
In the attached score, I want the first four measures (after the one-beat pickup) to be on the first line. I can't seem to make this happen.
I have tried selecting all the measures in the first line and then using Format/Stretch/Decrease Layout Stretch which worked well in another score. But here, as I continue in the "decrease" direction, the notes get closer together with each step until they suddenly stretch out and turn the first line into two lines with very wide measures. What I expected was that it would keep decreasing the note spacing until (full) measure 5 moved up to the end of the first line.
I've tried right clicking on the selected first line measures. First, it deselects all but one measure, and then decreasing the "Layout Stretch" number in Measure Properties box seems to have no effect.
How do I decrease the note spacing on the first line so that full measure 5 moves up to the first line?
Thanks!
Bruce

You do have 4 measures on the first system, But I think you want 5?
If so: don't have a system break at measure 4

Thanks. Yes, I do want 5 measures on the first line only. I want the one note pickup measure plus 4.
I can see what you did, but I don't understand how you did it. From your description it seems you removed a system break at measure 4, but I couldn't find how to do this.
I did manage to fix my problem by starting over. First I put in the first 8 bars, leaving out the first pickup note. Then I used Format/Add-Remove System Breaks, and set that to 4 measures per line. Then I inserted a measure at the beginning, modified it to be a one beat measure, and inputted my pickup note. Voila, I now have the 4 measures-plus-pickup that I wanted (same result you attached).
So, I have my problem fixed, but I'd like to understand how to modify a future score in this way.
Thanks,
Bruce

Click 2nd measure, shift+click last measure (i.e. select all measures but the pickup), use Format > Add/remove system breaks

To remove a single system break click on the system break symbol in the score (it looks like this ) and then press delete.
See https://musescore.org/en/handbook/3/breaks-and-spacers for more information about the different types of breaks available and how and where to use them.

That is really helpful. I didn't know what that symbol was for. Pretty much a newbie still, but I'll be doing a lot of lead sheets in the coming weeks. Thanks for the tip.

Here is the place to look for more answers https://musescore.org/en/handbook.
If you are new to Musescore, I suggest you do a speed read to familiarise yourself with what Musescore can do and the terminology used. It can be difficult to find things in the handbook if a) you don't know they exist or b) don't know what Musescore calls them.
Good luck.
