Converting Musescore 3 files to Musescore 4
I've heard that it is possible to convert files from Musescore 3 to 4 but not vice versa, but how is it done?

V4 will open V3 files. It just gives you notice that you are trying to open a V3 file. Continue on. Your original V3 file is not harmed.

But beware, if you save from V4 with the same name it will replace your V3 score and it will not then open in V3. Make sure you give the score a new name when saving from V4 if you want the original to remain compatible with V3.

I find keeping MS3 files intact and not converted to MS4 a complete pain. I wish there were a more sophisticated way of identifying MS3 files vs MS4 and also of keeping them distinct, unless there is a deliberate desire to convert an MS3 file to MS4.

The icon is different. Some people copy MS3 files that they want to use in MS4 to a new folder so that the original isn't touched. Yeah, my answer above was incomplete.
My MS3 points to /home/username/Documents/MuseScore3/Scores (on Linux). When I installed MS4 release candidate (the latest), it points to /home/username/Documents/MuseScore4/Scores. Say I want to take mysong.mscz file (from MS3) and try a convert on it. As other posters have clearly pointed out, you don't want to loose your MS3 version. I copy mysong.mscz from MS3 to MS4, and the two are separate. The MS4 converts (and saves) isolated from the original.
simple:
go to file explorer, right on file u want to open, open with, more apps, musescore 4, at the bottom click always open with this app. ez
