Scoring Two Themes in a Single Measure

Please excuse my ignorance (in a classical sense) in my explanation of my problem. I am new to MuseScore and scoring music.
I want to score a measure for the piano in 4/4 time that has a whole note and eighth and quarter notes above it.
When I try, it is placing all the notes sequentially and adds additional beats to the measure.
