Thank you. I realize now that I should have specified Musescore 4. In Musescore 3 I have it, but in the new version I cannot find it. Do you know where it is?
In Mu4 look at the top right of the screen:

To change the tempo, drag the six dots (on the left) to expose the Tempo slider which is seen in the picture here:

Excellent! It works. Thank you so much :)
To be clear, though - this slider is only for temporary overrides. To change the actual tempo of your score, simply edit the initial tempo marking, or add one if there isn't one currently.
