Voltas always span complete measures, so you could split the measure (and hide the barline)
In standard musical notation voltas always span complete measures and that is what Musescore does. You would have to split a measure and make the resulting bar lines invisible. See https://musescore.org/en/handbook/4/pickup-and-non-metered-measures#spl…
But expect puzzled looks from any musician you give the score to.

Not only that: you also have to hope that (s)he will play it correctly.

"I still can't place volta in mid-measure"
That's because MuseScore obeys music notation rules which require a volta to span one or more complete measures.
So you have to split your measure at the required beat.
- Select the split point (a note or a rest)
- Menu path: Tools > Measures > Split measure before selected note/rest

Attached is "Kiss The Rain Return".
Which may meet your needs while maintaining readability.
Again, a volta in mid-measure does not exist.
