Files continually corrupted
Hi, I can't open musescore files now that I'm in the latest version. I keep getting notes that say "cannot read file C:(etc...) followed by .MSC" instead of .MSCZ. This even happened with a score I just redid after a previous corruption. Any help appreciated. I did not have this problem with Musescore 3

In your scores folder, is the extension msc also? If so, edit the extension to read mscz. I might do this to a copy of the file.

For some reason, Windows 10 will not allow me to change the file extension
Mu1 supported .msc files, support for those got dropped with Mu2
So open them with Mu1 and save as .mscz, then open that with any later version

Not sure what Mu1 and Mu2 are.
I did look for a place to re-download Musescore 3 from this site but could not find it. Thought maybe I could open with that.
I store my files in folders where I create music (rather than in a musescore folder) and for some reason my computer will not let me rename them. It continually states "filename too long" even when I shorten the file name.

Too long the name of the file or path where it is saved?

MuseScore 1(.3) and MuseScore 2(.3.2)
Only MuseSore 1 can read .msc files, only very old version of MuseScore way before 1.0 could write them
The chances that you really have such files is next to nil. Although being a member here sonce more than 11 years, who knows.

It would appear my computer wants to name some of my scores as .msc even when created new. Any thoughts on why or how I might stop this? Very weird.
I have now tried opening in MuseScore 1.1, 3.0, and 4.1.1 (most recent). I was not able to open. Below is a collection of the notices I've received. I was able to go in and see the full file name and it DOES include the extension mscz, so that does not appear to be the problem. It appears that somehow my "internet security" is blocking me, but I don't have a way to change this and I don't understand why it blocks some files and not others, including those created relatively recently. Is there someone who can provide more detailed instruction on how to resolve this problem? I have even tried starting with and older version of the score and re-inputting my changes and saving it and still am not able to open (though fortunately I did export PDFs so at least I have a print version). I have also uninstalled and reinstalled Musescore 4.1.1 and updated it. I have restarted my computer 3 times.
Any help appreciated and sorely needed. Lost a lot of time on this.

I renamed SIX_DA~4.MSC by adding a Z to it to make a MSCZ file and it opened in 4.1.1.
As to why your filename extension seem to be truncated to three characters or you can't rename files on your system, I can only Google and guess as I use Linux for music etc. and only use Windows at work for standard office files but it certainly sounds like a system problem rather than a MuseScore one.

Windows usually gives a warning that changing the file extension can cause things to not work, but I have never found that it doesn't allow it if you ignore the warning.

Shoichi, Thank you for resolving my problem--although I still have, for some reason, been able to rename the file with the correct extension .

This looks like Windows falling back to (emulating) the old 8.3 filenames.

What file system format are you using, FAT or NFTS?
The score definitly is a Mu4 score

Thanks for you question and your help. I have long file names, usually adding Draft 1, Draft 2, etc. as I create new editions of something I'm working on. I have no idea how to answer your question. I skimmed the Wikipedia link you set and it appears to require either a) more basic background understanding than I have or b) more thought than I wish to put into this. If you think this is worth my time, I'll dig in and try to mess with my software--but as I don't know what I'm doing it seems likely to create further problems. Or you could, if you have time and interest, provide some direction (that doesn't involve acronyms, since I have to go look those up and understand them and then try to keep them lined up in my brain while reading a no-doubt helpful article written by someone for whom said acronyms are long-understood words that require no translation). A long way of me asking you, who seem to know much more about this stuff, if this is worth digging into. At this point the problem with this score is resolved.
It is REALLY weird that my computer, before doing this, was not allowing me to add/alter file extension names (on this file at least), which was something I used to do all the time many years past.

Hoping you see this. I am not a steady user of MuseScore but over the years have used it to do a number of compositions and arrangements. The problem that was solved earlier (as of Nov 23) is BACK and affecting all my slightly older scores. I get the same notices referred to in my attachment above, and even the file that others repaired for me has reappeared in ALL versions (including the repaired version) as not able to open for either a security reason (when I try to open from a windows file view) or for having too long a filename (when I try to open with my Musescore (I believe 4.2.1...not sure, when I check, it just says I have the most updated version). Something is amiss in either my computer (Windows 10) or MuseScore or the way they play together. Renaming the files does nothing. These files are all saved as mscz but, as you can see in the attachment below, they somehow become msc upon any interaction. I don't know what is going on, but I've got countless hours into these and they are lost to me. do you or anyone provide online consultation to help resolve this permanently? Is the problem that I'm on 10 rather than 11 (which my computer can't load)? Thanks for any help. Would prefer a personal response until I get some answer that will help others, but I don't really understand the rules here.
Also, I read and reread the Wikipedia post you mentioned, but I lack the background to be able to use that to solve my problem.

Thanks. However, on my files, it reads with a suffix of mscz. The MSC occurs when I upload the file here. I am attaching a printscreen. The grey file shows the mscz suffix; the window shows the message I receive. I have tried renaming the file and ensuring an mscz suffix; same result. I can't figure out why this would be occurring, nor can I find a solution. I have gone into my Windows security and told it to exclude the entire folder (and also tested excluding an individual file) and the same issue occurs. Sending these to you (or others) to rename for me will not work as a solution, because it appears (as this evidences) that the problem will reoccur at some point. I need to find the root cause and undo it. Any ideas?

Vince, FYI:
Don't copy your screenshots into Word files. Just save them as .JPG or (much better!) .PNG files. If your screenshot tool doesn't offer a way to save files, copy the screenshot into Paint (or an equivalent on Mac if you use it).
Word files can carry viruses and many people won't open them on the web (like this forum).

Are you using an alternative file manager such as TotalCommander and not the Windows Explorer?
Then it could be that an incorrect display is set here, namely the 8.3 file naming convention from the days of DOS.
