MuseScore 4's undocked mixer usually appears very narrow—or at a minimal width—on reopening the score
I often work with an undocked Mixer and save the score in that state, but I reopen a score the undocked mixer's width is not the same as when I saved the score.
Usually the Mixer incorrectly shows just one or two tracks ... of five or more tracks that were visible before saving.
Worse, often on reopening a score, the Mixer is so narrow that it looks like a pencil, and its presence is so insignificant that sometimes I don't even notice that is has opened. Even toggling it open and closed did not create enough of impact to call my eye to it, particularly when it opens on a second monitor:
This happens at least 80% of the time. And please note: issue pertains only to score saved while the mixer is undocked.
Just writing to see if anyone else has encountered this. I have no idea where the trigger is.

I've had something similar happen if at some point I've undocked the mixer and dragged one side to get it smaller and out of the way. On lower spec systems it can help to have the mixer open to help playback. But it takes up space. So making it smaller is an answer. And the state of the mixer saves for that score, and every ( or most, at least some ) score after that. Until I redock it and save the score.
But I haven't seen it randomly do it on its own.
If anyone can confirm this errant undocked Mixer behavior and its frequency—at least on the Mac—I would like to post a report to Github.

Windows here, I have had the mixer incorrectly default to docking or incorrectly default to being barely as wide as the master track.

So you're saying after saving a score in which the mixer is undocked, sometimes on reopening the score the mixer is docked?
Regarding the prime issue here, thanks for confirming the errantly narrow Mixer on Windows!

Yep, it did so for a few times in a row, then stopped. It also didn't always save the last open/close state, for both mixer and navigator.

I don't know if you've reported this on github or not, but if so, I'd like to subscribe to the issue to keep an eye on it.
In the meanwhile, at least under MuseScore version (64-bit): 4.2.1-240230937, revision: d757433 on MacOS 12.7.2, I find that embiggening the mixer to a useful size and then moving it causes it to remember its size.

Thanks. I did post to museScore a couple of weeks ago, but forgot to report back.

Steps to replicate the Mixer width issue on MacOS in the attached score:

The MacOS undocked "mixer width" issue is extant in MuseScore Studio 4.4. Also, toggling the mixer on/off still sometimes crashes the app.

"The MacOS undocked "mixer width" issue is extant in MuseScore Studio 4.4."
... and the "mixer width" issue is also extant in MuseScore 4.4.0 in Windows 10. Just a very narrow strip of Mixer visible, a constant irritation.

Because it seems that this issue is not going to get fixed any time soon, I hacked together a solution using Keyboard Maestro. It uses AppleScript to count how many channels there are in the mixer, multiplies that by the width of each mixer channel to get the new width, gets the current size and position of the window, and clicks and drags the right-hand side of the mixer to reveal all the channels
It's pathetic, it's probably much too fragile, it took hours and hours of trying different approaches befor finally breaking down and using direct mouse manipulation. Scripting the window size directly does not work, possibly because of whatever's wrong with the window in the first place. It's good enough for me until they fix this, but I am not expecting a solution this year.

When it happens, the feature "Restore the default layout" (in menu View) should be fix it. E g. https://musescore.org/en/node/341876
This issue is extant in MS 4.4.3
