MuseScore 4 - no sound with Sound Blaster AE-7
Hi,
Whilst MuseScore 3 works with no issue, I can not get MuseScore 4 to emit any sound, either playing on a midi keyboard, or playback of a score. When looking in the Edit/Preferences/Audio & MIDI menu, whatever sound device I choose, I am unable to select a buffer size (it remains blank).
I've seen that others have raised this issue, and I have patiently waited for each update to see if it is fixed. Is there any news about what the issue might be, and how it can be resolved?
I assume that this is an issue with how the Sound Blaster AE-7 and MuseScore 4 interoperate, as this seems to be what others have found. For now, I'll have to go back to MuseScore 3...
Thanks
Jon

Have you tried not using the Sound Blaster? Early versions of MU4 needed audio help. But not so much now. I used to need to use my Focusrite to get good playback. but not any more.

Hi. Afraid I've tried that. I have a focusrite as well, plus can pay sounds out through the monitor, but even when they're selected no sound comes out. Think I'd need to disable the AE-7 in the bios, which defeats the point in having it!

Shouldn't need the bios. If this is Windows you can select which device is the default. In control panel>Sound. Or disable it in Device Manager.
In general, a device has to be set as default before you can choose it in Preferences.

Finally got round to trying this out.
Unfortunately it didn't work.
Just to explain, it's not just a matter of it not playing around sounds - when I click play in MuseScore 4, the line showing where in the score it is just stays at the start of the first bars, and nothing happens (other than the play button turning into the pause button). Also, when I press keys on my midi keyboard, no notes appear depressed on the 'Piano keyboard' view.
Guess I'll just head back to MuseScore 3, and hope that eventually MuseScore 5 will solve the issue.
Is this something that could be added to a bug list? Or should I just give up?

Hi, really useful to know - thanks. And in a way a bit surprising. I just managed to get it to work!
I was looking back over all the support tickets in the forum to do with Soundblaster and AE-7, and I stumbled across one talking about turning direct mode on (setting in the Sound Blaster Command program) - which I did, and everything now seems to work. No a horrendous solution, as all I need to do is toggle that switch whenever I use MuseScore.
