"Play 8" feature for drum part

• Mar 24, 2025 - 16:39

for drum parts it would be really useful if there was a way to have eight measures grouped together and be able to just put a "play 8" text over a small area for more road map style like jazz big band or other similar type drum parts. It's hard to describe without an image but if you look at the image attached you'll see what I mean.

Not a repeat, and not specifically for 8 measures but an indication to play a given number of bars of "time" that can be condensed into a small space for a more "road map" style drum part. This type of thing is very common in big band jazz drum parts and can be easily done in finale/dorico and sibelius. Again, it'll make more sense if you look at the image.

If I understand correctly, you really do not need actual, written drum notation but rather that the drummer "fills in" or plays -- e.g., a standard bossa nova beat -- for a number of bars:

Rehearsal marks can be used in conjunction with multimeasure rests to separate 14 bars into a "Play 8" and a "Play 6". The multimeasure rests can be made invisible and the "Play" rehearsal marks moved onto the staff.
Playback, of course, will be silent for those "bars of time". Any specific drum notation placed elsewhere (e.g., for intros, changes, or breaks) will be heard.

Here's an example score:

To see the multimeasure rests, open the eye icon next to 'Invisible' in the Properties panel.
