Removing unnecessary rests
I ahve a couple of "stray" rests that I cannot delete. I have tried the delete feature and it does not delet these particular rests.

They are possibly in voice 1. Rests in voice 1 can't be deleted. They can be made invisible by selecting then and using keyboard shortcut V. But if the rests are not needed, you may not need to be using more than 1 voice.

Can you post a screenshot, or even better, the document?
Sometimes, you need those rests. For example, the sopranos don't sing, while the altos sing in that measure. The sopranos would have a measure rest.
