transcribing medieval ligatures

• Oct 13, 2017 - 11:20

Hello

I think we've had this conversation before. Do you think you could develop a simple way of adding a sign for medieval ligatures? (i.e. the equivalent of a "pedal" sign, but above the score and with the edges turning downwards). I've tried using the straight line feature in order to photoshop the rest of the sign later but it turns out to be far too time consuming. I'm left with the pedal sign but that is not 100% satisfactory.

Is musescore compatible with other software (finale and the like) so that I could use that to add my ligatures to my existing scores?

thanks

Gerard

You can use the straight line. After you enter it right click it and select line properties. You can then ad the hooks and, if needed, text. No need to Photoshop it.

Thanks, that's really useful to know. But it still seems to me that I have to alter them one by one. Am I mistaken? ( i selected all the lines in the piece but the alterations seemed to apply to only one line at a time) Would there be a way for it to apply for each and every line in the score in one single go?

Ok. I've updated musescore, so it's now called musescore 3 on my mac. I can now tick "enable editing" and have access to the palette menu that appears when I right-click the "lines" palett menu. But when I select a line with hooks in my score, I can press ctrl and shift (i.e. the upwards arrow key on the left under caps lock) but can't drag the line in any way. I'll check the handbook again, but is there a specific move to follow with Mas OS X?

MuseScore 3 is an unstable nightly version and there is no guarantee you will be able to open it with any other build, so I suggest you stick with either 2.1 or if you want what will probably be the next version released use the 2.2 nightly.

You need to right click the title of the palette not on any item in it to assure you can enable editing. While you are dragging the line, a little plus will appear and the red anchors for the line will be visible. The process is a little different that most mouse actions. You need to press and hold ctrl & shift before you click the item. Make sure you do not release the ctrl & shift until the line is over the new palette then release the mouse and then release the ctrl & shift. I have never heard that this is different on any other Operating System.

Ok, as i've been receiving messages offering to update the software for months I thought it might be a good idea. How can I revert back to the previous, more stable version?

When you mean the palette title, you mean for instance "lines", right? When I do that, i do get a menu, but more often than not, I can't tick "enable editing" or any other of the lines, so right now I'm not even sure i can try the next step

Ah! You are not in custom palettes. At the bottom of the list of palettes is says "Advanced" in the picture you are showing. If you have a custom work space, then clicking that will reveal a drop down menu that says "Basic" "Advanced" and "myspace" where "myspace" is the name of your custom work space. If you have never created a custom work space, you will need to press the + next to advanced or basic to create a custom work space. It will start off looking exactly like the one you are viewing when you press the +. Once you name it you can create custom palette, edit existing palettes or even delete palettes you don't ever use (they will not be deleted from the Basic or Advanced work spaces).

See: https://musescore.org/en/handbook-basics/palettes-and-workspaces#custom… for the online handbook page.

edit: we cross posted so I guess this reply wasn't necessary. Your user guide on your laptop should have directions for simulating a right click. I guess a Mac user needs to fix the ctrl-shift-drag instructions to show Mac commands. I don't want to mess them up since I use Windows.

OK, si I finally managed to drag it, but I had to press Cmd (the apple sign equivalent, a kind of 4-leaved clover symbol) and shift (the upwards arrow) and NOT "ctrl" and shift. I must have created a "new palette" with a free space in it at some point while fiddling around as there was one waiting for my new line in the palette. I think i may have dragged it using the trackpad and not the mouse (I need a mouse to right click elements on musecore). But I checked and it seems to work out with the mouse as well.

Concerning versions, my computer has called the software Musescore3 but it is presented as 2.0.3 when it opens. I assume it's a proper version and anyway so far so good. Thanks for your help. I'm very happy with my newly renamed "ligatures" palette.
