How do I force a bar and its successors on to a new line. In the example I want bar 9 ("though you want to stay") to go on the next line. It would be just as good to force Muse score to set four bars per system, although this is just an accident here.

Now I want to force Muse score to use more space between consecutive systems; I really want three systems per page but even when this is so, I want to shift a given system up or down on the page. As you might gather from this I want to create a new Muse score voice part which I can 'add' to an existing pdf piano part by over-printing the two pages. Finally can I make individual bars wider or narrower so as to match the bar widths in the existing piano part. Or ... is there an even easier way?

Yes I see that I need to set the distance between staves to a larger value so that I get only three staves per page; which distance do I use in general/page? I've reset stave distance and grand staff distance but neither seems to have an effect.

Merging scores in Muse score
My previous contributions to this thread started half-way into the story. I'll try here to get back to the start in case the problem I am talking about is one faced by other users.
I have an existing score in SATB plus piano accompaniment. I have taken the melody out of the SATB so that I can sing it solo. I now want to combine this melody with the existing piano part to create a piano/vocal arrangement.
The constraint is that I must use the existing piano part as it is. To transcribe it myself in Muse score would be a huge amount of work and completely unnecessary. I have therefore come up with this plan.
I write the solo part in Musescore on one stave and leave large gaps between the staves.
I cut the piano part out of the original score and physically paste it in these gaps.
I adjust the bar lines in my solo part so that they align with the bar lines in the piano part.
To do this I need to do just two things in Muse score.
Leave the right size gaps in my solo part.
Adjust the positions of the bar lines as required.

For what you are trying to do I would increase both the min and max system distance so you will have enough space between each system (group of parts). You need to ensure the min distance is less than then max distance or MuseScore will likely not make you happy.

Here is where you change the numbers. I attached my edited score using the numbers in the picture, you can adjust them further if needed.
I'm guessing you have already counted measure numbers so the number of measures on each line is correct. If not, then right click a line break and chose select>All similar Elements in selection and delete the existing ones, then insert a line break on each line to satisfy your requirements.

A min and max spacing of 40 is correct.
More than 40 puts less than three systems per page.
Very much less than 40 puts more than three systems on a page.
A little less than 40 leaves too much space at the bottom of the page.
Luckily it turns out that 4 measures per line is how the original piano part is written, so there is no need to adjust that. The score ends with three bars on the last line so there is no orphan bar at the end.
I see that I now need to adjust the left and right margins in my score to bring it into alignment with those in the piano part.
After that I need to adjust the bar widths to bring the bars in my score into alignment with those in the piano part.
I might also adjust the top margin to centre the score vertically on the page.
Then all is done except the cutting and pasting!

Another possibility is using frames. You can actually paste an image of the piano stave(s) into a frame (instead of literally cutting and gluing). A pasted piano staff image can even be resized for a better fit.

(where each frame's height can be adjusted independently - instead of using system distances.

I set first page to 2 but no page number appears on the score. How do I force it to appear?

Where do I supply the value of the first bar number.

When I make the spacer big enough to push the next stave down far enough, that stave goes on to the next page. Presumably Muse score expects some stuff below that stave. More specifically:
I can push the stave down to start at 15.2 cm above the bottom of the page.
I want it to start at 13.2 cm. above the bottom of the page, a difference of 2 cm.
This is because I have stuff to enter above this stave and below it.

When I use the downward spacer to create enough space above stave 2 Muse score sends stave 2 on to he next page. I need this pattern

but as I say, stave 2 gets sent on to the next page. How do I overcome that?
Where do I set the index of the initial bar?
When I set the index of the initial page the index is shown in the controlling window but not on the score. Why is that?

You need to reduce that quite a lot of space by so much that the 2nd staff does not move on to the next page. Most likely the min. and max system distance at https://musescore.org/en/handbook/layout-and-formatting#style-edit-gene…, or the Lentz of the spacer you used

This is the original file. I will be pasting white over the voice bars 21-24 and 33-36. Then I will prepare on Musescore a version with the solo part where bars 21-24 and 33-36 are and white elsewhere. When I print the two images superimposed I have the effect i want, namely the original file with the SATB replaced by solo voice. T he top of bar 33 should be at 9.2 cm. from the bottom of the page. The lowest I can get it in Muse score is 11.1 cm. Somewhere something in Muse score is preventing me putting bars 33-36 low enough on the page.
I'm posting the muse score version here also.
i need to point out to Muse score that the bars 33-36 are at the bottom of the page, that no space is required for any more objects. This I do not understand how to do.

You have min. and max. system distance set to the same huge value, 40. Set the former to something reasonable like 8 and the bottom system can get moved further down without going to the next page

It is not the score from above, right? That does have
$p, lowercase, so it won't show in the first page.So please share the score showing the problem
