How do you shorten stem length?
I have tried shortening stem lengths via Style/General/Notes/ShortenStems, but it has no effect. What am I doing wrong? I am creating a score for a barbershop quartet, and the long stems obscure the lyrics.

That setting only affects stems on notes whose stems are sticking far above or below the staff. It's a progressive settings, with stems shortened more the further away the staff they are. In order for us to advise better, it would help if you attached your score.
Meanwhile, though, you can shorten stems individually by double-clicking them and moving the handles. But better is probably to simply move the lyrics, using for examples Style / General / Page / Lyrics top margin.
