learning mode with the keyboard
Hello,
I have a question regarding the keyboard mode (View>Piano keyboard).
Is it possible to enable a "wait for input" mode so that when I connect my keyboard and press a corresponding note, the score will "move" right along with my playing? And then can I enable a note to be highlighted BEFORE I actually hit it on the keyboard (learning mode)? Thanks.

It would be possible for someone to write such app for learning songs, sure :-). But MuseScore is not that app - it's specifically intended to help create scores, with just enough playback features built in to be useful for that purpose.

Mark, thank you for your input. I do understand that this software is intended for creating scores, but the addition of highlighted keyboard keys on midi playback is NOT absolutely necessary for score creation. I can input notes with my Yamaha keyboard just fine without looking at the software keyboard. Wasn't the original idea to help users to learn to play the score all along? That is why this software has the potential to become even more versatile. I don't think adding the option of "wait for input" would take away from the score creation process, it would only enhance the capabilities of MuseScore and make it #1. I would gladly pay for that option to be included. You'd have a free MuseScore and a paid one with additional features. Just a thought. :)

For the record, I am not saying additional "training" types of features would never be added. I'm just helping set your expectations as to the priority of this type of thing and suggest you'd probably get better results faster looking elsewhere. Features like this don't in themselves "take away" from score creation, but the time and effort spent implementing such features is time and effort does take away from the development of features that have more to do with score creation.
But when you suggest the free MuseScore and paid one, you're on the right track, I think. This sort of performance-oriented feature is really much more in line with the mobile app than with the MuseScore (the editor program) itself. So I wouldn't be surprised to see it added as a "Pro" feature there some day.
BTW, your example of the piano keyboard is a good case in point regarding the focus of the MuseScore editor program. Although I'm glad you find this feature useful for training purposes, that is not why it was added. It was added as a way of entering notes - so you can simply click notes to enter them if you don't have a MIDI keyboard. It only took a tiny tweak to the code to make it work during playback, so that didn't take anything from other development tasks that are focused on score creation.
Similarly, most of the playback features in MuseScore are intended primarily to help composers hear their works performed as intended. When it's easy to tweak them to make them useful for training - like adding the count-in option to the metronome feature - that usually gets done. Whereas what you describe - "score following" - is actually an extremely complex AI task. So it's kind of unlikely it would just be tossed in on a whim. Could be an interesting Google Summer of Code project some day though!

Very thorough explanation. Point taken. Didn't hurt to ask though, I'm sure I was not the only one who thought of the idea looking at the highlighted keyboard performance. ;)

Hey guyz,
I really would like to have a practice mode in Musescore that reads the microphone of my ipad and waits till i press the correct note. if thats in musescore... its the complete package even for me! Because piano noob here... some background information... I'm pro user of musescore (mainly so i can store favorites + so i can support the tool). started a year ago or so with some breaks due to work overload @ work. I have reading dyslexia and ADHD. An awesome combination for an instrument as such as a Piano having 2 hands and 2 bars to read while playing simultaniously. I still have to "euhh"... ooh a B... "euhh" ooh! an F hahaha but i aint giving up. But I do can play numbers out of my head no problem. Decided that its time for some software help. It Tends to become a bit boring still only able to play kindersongs directly from paper and still struggling doing that! :p I think i'll have to look further for a program that can help me with this. But decided to raise my voice here anyway as a feature that would be appreciated ;)

You are talking about the mobile player app (iPad) which is part of the online score sharing ecosystem of musescore.com.
This forum here on musescore.org only deals with the free notation software. Re-post your request at https://musescore.com/groups/musescore-ios if you wish for the correct people to see it.
