Playback controls are grayed out.
Last night my wife was working on a music score. She was able to play the song back after she made her edits. Today, however, she is unable to play any of her scores back in MuseScore because the playback controls are grayed out. I have done the following to try to solve this problem:
1) Backed up my wife's current scores
2) Deleted the current MuseScore off our PC
3) Installed MuseScore 2.2.1
4) Updated to MuseScore 2.3.2
5) Entered MuseScore 2.3.2 and pulled up a score and still the playback controls are grayed out.
6) Downloaded MuseScore 3 BETA. Copied a 2.3.2 score over to MuseScore 3 and opened it. Playback controls are STILL grayed out.
7) At a loss, not sure what to do, please help.
Dell laptop, running windows 10, no MIDI device connected to computer.

Ciao whitenotes1 .
Install 2.3.2;
Install 3 if you want (can coexist alongside the 2).

I tried all of your suggestions. Thank you very much. None of the suggestions worked. Playback controls AND the View->Synthesizer options are grayed out.

Yes, can read it with "Libre Office" ;-).
But your settings in this window are empty. If sound work with other applications try to upgrade your sound card driver.

@ whitenotes1, go into your soundcard configuration from Control Panel and ensure that the "Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device" in the Advanced tab of both Playback and Recording is unticked.
Check if any System updates (e.g. sound card) were made after the last time MsS worked.

with a little patience read the answers.
Try installing another soundfont (https://musescore.org/en/node/50721 )

I read the "see also" link. No joy there.
I checked the preferences soundfont directory and it is correct.
Not sure what to try now. It does appear that the sound card is not recognized. No Windows 10 updates were applied last night.
Thank you for the help.

If the reinstalling of the sound card driver doesn't help, maybe take a look, if another running sound application of Windows blocked the playback.

I checked that sound card configuration and unticked the boxes for both playback and recording. No joy.
Sorry :(

Thank you so much! Unticking the box made the difference for me after I tried figuring out what was wrong for about 10 hours on my new laptop. :)
Thank you all for your help. There were good suggestions all around. I finally just rebooted my laptop. MuseScore playback controls are NOW enabled and playback does work! Thanks again. My wife will be most pleased.
My opinion here: I think the laptop didn't come up correctly in the first place which made it ignore the sound card or think it didn't have one. I did uncheck the boxes that allow applications exclusive playback and recording control on the sound card as was suggested, but while the laptop was running, it had zero effect. I tried playing youtube.com videos and they were blowing up with playback errors so I just decided to reboot. Youtube videos and playback in MuseScore 2.3.2 work perfectly now.
Again, thank you for the help! It is most appreciated.
