Transposing playback for a rare instrument
I have to arrange a song for an instrument that is four semitones lower than concert pitch - - for example, hitting the F# key would yield a D in concert pitch. While MuseScore automatically handles the appropriate playback for most transposed instruments, (e.g. clarinet) I don't think MuseScore has any instruments that support my instrument's specific transposition. Is there a way to manually change the playback's transposition to play my arrangement as I would hear it, or is that a restriction on the instrument level beyond MuseScore's control?

You can change the transposition of the instrument to anything you like. Right click the staff, choose staff/part properties and change the transposition so it says 0 octaves, then 4- Major Third with Below marked. While you're there you can change the instruments long and short names.
I'm curious what this instrument is. If it's a horn in A-flat, then all you need to do is add the instrument. When you get to the add instruments dialog box, search for horn below all of the instruments you can search for, and you will see the horn in Ab.

It's an arrangement for a specific carillon that transposes four semitones down (and includes both bass and treble clefs) which is why I suspect MuseScore doesn't have in-house support for it.

Interesting...I've never heard of a transposing carillion. If you are not aware, you can start with a piano and both staves will transpose at once with the instructions above. If you want a different sound, you can use the mixer (press F10) and change the sound to something better. You can also start with a carillion with one staff (that plays a decent sound) and press i, select the staff under the carillion and click Add staff (not linked staff) to add a bass clef staff to the instrument.
