Option to manually turn page

• May 1, 2019 - 07:11

I’m frustrated by the automatic page turn on the last measure. If you are working on any music with voices, the page flips before you can add all the notes. Surely that page flip, which makes sense for replays ... could be disabled for “active editing”. That would allow me to finish filling in that last measure without wrestling with the prematurely flipped page.

Yes I know I have the option of a continuous score but I like the individual pages because that allows me a visual preview of how the score will look when I finally file it as a pdf file for posting on my blog.

I checked out the Scaling options. But that just gave me more lines and bars in a smaller format which would make input difficult. I can’t find “Pan Score” ... but I’m working with Musescore 2, so perhaps that feature isn’t available. ( Or I’m not too bright !)

The problem was there were the same number of lines per sheet ... only they were smaller. With a large empty space at the bottom of each page. No way to avoid that “last bar” problem. I would think that the programmers could very easily create a button which could switch off the automatic page turn if needed. Something simple.

What do you mean about it not applying to a stationary page?

Also note you really don't need to disable panning at all. Even if the score moves to th next system, you can still easily add notes to the current chord, switch voices and adds notes to the previous measure, cursor backs to correct errors, etc - just as if the page hadn't moved.

I don’t seem to be able to stop that last measure from flipping to a new page the moment I add the final note in any one of the voices. A simple chord is impossible without tolerating the flip and then going back to that measure.
But I have a work around. I highlight the last line on the page, then go to “add remove breaks” and adjust the line to one extra bar. Then complete the line and highlight my work and go back to “add remove breaks” and choose the original number of measures per line.
This seems awfully cumbersome when a simple button/operation sound be able to stop that automatic page flip. And make it a command flip.

I still don't understand. If you turn off the "Pan score automatically" button, there should be no automatic jump. Unless what you really mean is, at some point while entering notes into a measure - which could be anywhere within it, not just after the last note - the measure itself becomes too wide to fit on the current system, and so it "word wraps" to the next, and the view naturally jumps to follow just as any word processor would. Hard to imagine how you'd want the view not to follow the measure when it necessarily moves to the next system like that. But in any case, like I said, adding a note to the last chord you just entered (eg, by typing Shift+B to add a B, etc) works perfectly well whether you can see the chord you just entered or not. And if uou really want to see it, just hit left cursor. MuseScore cna't know if the next note you are about to enter will be in the previous or next measure, so no matter it does, it's right sometimes, wrong sometimes, and you'll need to use the cursor to get where you want.

I suspect I have once again missed something basic ... such as the simple “ctrl” + mouse to adjust the size of the keyboard. So simple.
But I can’t seem to operate the “Pan Score Automatically” button. Perhaps I have the wrong button, since nothing seems to be labeled. Or I’m missing a basic trick ...

Shoiji also pointed it out earlier in this discussion. So I know where the darned thing is, but I can’t seem to activate it. I press it and the frame dissolves but nothing happens. The page still flips on the last measure. I tried holding the control button and a variety of combinations to no avail. I’m missing something and I dread to think it will be so simple that once again I’ve missed the obvious.

Okay ... I deactivated it with no result. Then I tested it while playing back a finished score and then it worked perfectly. Stopped cold at that last measure on the page. But only for playback.
However, when I tried a blank manuscript and began to fill in the notes, once again that page flipped. Obviously I don’t input all the voices simultaneously. Usually I start with the treble clef and then add the bass chords. Except for choral works. The moment I add the last note on the last beat in any voice, the page flips.
I’ve resigned myself to simply adding a blank measure to the last line and then deleting it when I’ve finished with the page. I’m sure I’m not the only one who would appreciate a simple “off” button when working on a score. But I may still have missed something here.

Sorry, but I'm still not understanding. Did you read my comment about the function of this button in https://musescore.org/en/node/288527#comment-917226? Again, if the measure literally doesn't fit on the line any more, of course the entire measure has to move to the next line, the and the score view jumps with it There is no other possible option - would you expect the measure to just stick out off the right side of the page? The toggle button doesn't force a measure to fit on a line if it doesn't. it merely changes what happens if you've entered the last note of a measure that does still fit.

So, if your problem is you find the "word wrap" of measures distracting, one obvious solution is to use continuous view while initially entering notes. Another would be to enter some temporary line breaks before entering notes.

If this still doesn't clear things up, please attach a score you are having problems with and describe to us exactly what is going wrong. I am not understanding the purpose of the blank measure you describe, so somehow we seem to be talking about different things here.

Thanks for your patience. I’m really familiar with measure sizes and often program a different number of measures per line to make sure my score is easy to read. And I love minimalism and plenty of space for the pdf files which I offer for download on my site. So there’s never a crowded measure anywhere.
Just now, I went back to MuseScore 3 and find that the disable button DOES work perfectly in that version! I’ve been working with MusScore 2 and it doesn’t seem to work in that version. Here’s my test bar ... when I input a note in either bass or treble ... or an inner voice ... the page flips even when the button is disabled.

But since MuseScore 2 is an earlier version, I’ll just go back to adding the “extra” bar and delete it
Thanks again for your help and patience.

A score is not quite a word document, so I suggest that you not worry about the final layout until the score is complete. You may then decide to adjust the stretch on a few measure to fit more on a system or insert some system breaks to put fewer measures on a line or even use a page break to make multiple pages look more even.

In version 3, continuous view gets slow very quickly if there are a lot of instruments, so you would need to decide for yourself if it works for you at all.

BTW, I can relate to the automatic page turn you describe. What I do when I transcribe a score in version 3 is set the scaling in Format->Page settings so that only when I have a lot of very short notes do I occasionally fill the system but I normally have one measure at the end of the system. (Yes, I do adjust this as I go along if needed). When I'm done with entering notes on the system, I select its last measure and press enter to force a system break (like a word processor). This also keeps the measures for being crowded and minimizes the number of unwanted page turns I experience.
