From the application manager you can install all 3 (2.3.2/3.0.5/3.1)

OS: Linux Mint 19, Arch.: i386, MuseScore version (32-bit): 3.1.0., revision: d4b829c
The application manager determines the version according to the operating system. I would say that it is an automatic process. I keep all three of them here, just in case. But the Nightly is outdated:

(Mint is installed next to a Vista of about 20 years)
