Chord note stems spanning 2 staves didn't work.
I tried to extend the note stem from the bass clef to link to the note in the treble clef as the handbook describes and what happened was the spacing between the staves spread apart to make room for the longer note stem, rather than allowing me to link it. I did not find any way to control the automatic spacing of the staves to overcome this problem. Any ideas?

Make it even longer, or disable autoplacement for it

Where do I disable autoplacement for the stems? I am having the same trouble with joining the stems between notes on the treble clef and bass clef.

use the Staff spacer fixed down in the Breaks and spacers menu. It was made for things like this. BTW, it's the one that looks like a capital i with no arrow.

I tried the staff spacer in the Breaks and Spacers menu but when I saved my score the staves autoplaced and separated the note stems.

I think you probably neglected to use the fixed spacer. If you continue to have trouble, please attach your score so we can understand and assist better.
