Beta 3.3 -- Can't see palette tabs in dark mode.

• Aug 31, 2019 - 22:35

OS: macOS 10.14, Arch.: x86_64, MuseScore version (64-bit): 3.3.0.23559, revision: f94c273

Well, I was pretty confused, but the problem is simple. Please fix, thanks.

(2 pieces of good news, though -- Roman Numerals, including 6-4-2, work, and my plugins work)).

Comments

  • Indeed, curious things in dark mode, unreadable palette names/mix of the two modes: very bad

  • Frequent crashes when opening the program: double-clicking on the MuseScore icon: not understand yet the real cause

  • You can Hide the palettes (after click on the three points): but how you recover/display them again?

Many work remaining.

Click on "Add more palettes" indeed. Curious. You should be able to put the display of your palette back where you can hide it, not elsewhere. You certainly have to get used to it, but when there is a lot of confusion at the beginning and unexpected things, it's never a very good sign, I fear. An added value must be felt immediately, otherwise it is problematic.

I would say in general, a prominent "Add more palettes" is a big improvement, very few people would ever have discovered how to do this in older versions without asking here or studying the Handbook in great detail. But I would also agree that somehow unhiding one you previously hid feels different enough to warrant either a different label ("Add/restore palettes") or maybe two separate buttons for adding versus restoring. It would also, I assume, be very easy to add a third item to the "..." menu: "Add/restore palettes" there are well as at the top.

On the other hand, I don't think it's yet determined that we will be keeping the same set of default palettes; there seems to be some thinking it could be good to start with a simpler set and then let people add to it as needed. In prior versions this would be disastrous as no one would figure out how, but now maybe it could be fine.

Aside from this, my initial observations are, the list of palettes uses too much extra space vertically, I can't fit them all on the screen at once any more. And I miss the "Single Palette" option. So the bottom line is I would need to scroll an awful lot more with this set up (I hardly ever need to scroll the palettes now). I also see the command "Palette Search" (for which you can define a shortcut) no longer works, even though there is a search box.

Overall, quibbles and glitches aside, I like the basic ideas behind the changes.

1) The basic use model hasn't changed, nor should it in my view: drag & drop or double-click to add palette elements.

2) The "More" button to access the additional symbols from the master palette works is a nice touch. Much clearer and simpler than the old "???" button to bring up the full master palette.

3) Once you get to the palette, it completely navigable by keyboard (and there is screenreader feedback). This is a huge win for accessibility. Getting to the palette is currently possible via Shift+Tab.

4) Both the cursor keys and the Tab key seem to work in navigation, but it isn't really clear how they differ (it is clear they do differ, if in nothing than how the highlighting appears).

5) When using the palette search, probably we don't need to see the More button.

6) I loved being able to move Barlines back up where MuseScore 2 had it (near clefs, key, and time signatures), without needing to create custom workspace just for that. Similarly, moving symbols from palette to palette is a breeze. I definitely see myself using custom palettes a lot more.

7) Palette names have "&&" instead of "&", this must be a holdover from the old system where this was needed internally.
