Can't Edit Header and Footer

• Jan 23, 2019 - 14:12

I'm using the last Musescore 3 version, and I don't know if it is because the Automatic Placement feature,or it's a bug,but these two texts,i can't edit the Offset and Size, and there is no option to deactivate the automatic placement for them, since i can't right-click these texts,is there a solution to this?

Using version 3 and trying to create a template so I can create 25 exercises, but it refuses to allow
me to create a header and save it. I need 4 lines in the header, some in Italics and some in
regular script....won't do any of it. What's going on....is it version 3?

Thanks Marc. I'm baffled. I used to be able to just click and write in the header box. Now whatever changes I try to create or make in a single line affect the entire header. I've tried everything for about
90 minutes, just trying to create a header for 25 lessons. Why can't I just type in the box, change
to or out of Italics, and type 3 lines.

What do you mean by "header box", a vertical/title frame? There you can edit texts by double-clicking them and use the text toolbar to make it italic, bold, underlined etc.
For text in header/footer it is different though, those apply to the entire score, so you can't have them different on page 2 and 4, and for having them in italic, bold, etc you'd need to use HTML like tags, e.g. <i>italic</i>

To be clear: there are two totally different things being confused here.

A header is text that appears on each and every page, except the first. This has always been accessed by the Style dialog only and has always required use of tags to change font.

The box at the top of the first page is not the header, that's a vertical frame for the the title etc. And this is always possible to just type into directly. If your score does not yet have a title frame (because you didn't enter a title when creating it), you can add one at any time via Add / Text / Title, or adding a frame from the palette. This is not changed from earlier versions.

Some kind of a dialog box appears. When I type, everything in the box is affected. In the past, I could just type, change font / change size and continue. Each lesson has a particular title but I use the top and the signature the same each time. Whatever changed, I can not seem to be able to type, edit and continue. The "dialog" box makes everything the same.

Did you see my comment above? I am pretty sure you are confusing the title box with the header box. Again, the header does not normally appear on the first page, and does not allow you to change font except via tags. I am 90% sure you really are looking for the title box, not the header. Because again, none of this has changed in many years.

It's still unclear what you are talking about. Again, the header dialog does not even have controls for size. There is a control in the text style for the header, which is separate.

If you attach your score we can much better understand and assist. Please also describe precisely what you are doing - which dialog you are in, which buttons you are pressing, etc.

Sorry to rant on about this, but when I adjust the size of the text, it will not allow me to save it. When I close it just reverts back to original type. Quite frustrating. I've spent almost 2 hours trying to "fix" this.
I have ATTACHED two versions of the same lesson. The PDF is what it is supposed to look like. The Musescore will not allow me to edit the Italics in the title, nor move my signature where I wish. Keep in mind, the PDF was created with Musescore in November, 2018. Something changed.

As I suspect, that is not a header, it's a title. So that does explain some of the confusion.

Now that we see what you re talking about, I think I know exactly what you've been doing wrong. To edit text, you double-click it. but you dn't want to edit the text here, you just want to change its properties. So, don't double-click, just single click. Now you can change its properties in the Inspector. if you try to use the Inspector while the text is double-clicked, it won't work. This is indeed technically different from 2.x, because 2.x didn't allow you to change text properties using the Inspector in the first place - you had top right-click and use a separate dialog box. Either way, though, double-clicking was never the way.

I should add that once you have double clicked the text, you can use the text toolbar to make individual characters or words italic or a different size or whatever. But in both 2 & 3, this is only meant for that purpose - changing fonts within a single text. For changing font on the text as a whole, single click, then make the change in the Inspector.

"... frustrated..."
Yes, I absolutely get what you mean. Something in the MS edit software within the Inspector just refuses to "take" the setting you have just applied to Title or Subtitle. Let's say "italic" or "change font size" for part of the text. Every time it reverts to the default. I try to remember my multiple attempts - and which was the successful one...? The nearest I have got to a partial solution is to hit Enter in the Inspector for the chosen setting, then Save immediately.

IMHO this aspect needs a serious rework, because it's neither predictable nor successful in its present form.

See my comments above. There is no mystery here, it works every time without fail if you single click the text you want to change the properties of, but fails every time without fail (!) if you double click. Simply put - the Insepctor doesn't work if you are in Edit mode. There is an open issue for that, probably the easy solution is just disable it until you return to normal mode.

If you encounter such a situation again (changing the style in the inspector, but it seemingly not working) try pressing the "reset to style" arrows in the inspector for those settings for the element and then try again.
It should revert any custom formatting embedded into the text itself, after which style/inspector settings should then work as expected again, because they're no longer overwritten by the text itself.
