Can somebody please explain clearly how to keep the name you put on the score when you Save it or use options following?

Can you explain in more detail what you mean? The title - the text that appears at the top of the score - doesn't go away when you save, it isn't affected at all. When you first save a file, if you gave it a title, that title is autoamtically chosen as the default filename, so you don't have to do anything special.

thanks. can you clarify ass it seems you use save in two different senses here.
when starting a score the funny designation comes up, eg. svhbnt or something like that. usually when i click Save (which i now do because i don't understand what autosave does) the next time i open it up it still has the same funny title.( i am not sure where this file goes, but i did find a way to delete it if i wanted). it doesn't change the designation to the title i put on the score (although once somehow one score went to a different place and had the title i put on it instead of the funny designation).

Sounds like you opened an autsosave file after a crash? scXXXXX.mscz?
If so use "Save as", navigate to your desired folder and enter a better filename

can you or someone please clearly explain the different Save functions, what consequences they have for the title, where the file goes, etc. the handbook does not explain this and it is confusing.

They work exactly the same as in all computer programs, which is why the Handbook doesn't devote more time to it.
Save saves the current document back to the same file you opened it from.
Save As saves the current document to a new file and makes that the current file for future Save operations
Save a Copy saves the current document to a new file but keeps the original file for future Save operations
None of these affect the title - the text at the top of the score - in any way whatsoever. As to where they save, as I explained previously, that depends on what folder you select in the file dialog that appears.

can you add to the above where the files are saved in the 3 different cases, how to find them there, and what effect if any this has on the title and the file name.

It's exactly as I already said. If you use save, it saves to the same file, which means the same folder, that you opened it from I don't know what fodler you opened the score form, only you do. If you use Save As or Save a Copy, it saves to the folder you select in the file dialog that appears. Again, I don't know what folder you selected only you do.
As for how to find the files in the folders you elected to save them to, simply choose the same folder when you start looking for the file. That applies whether you are looing using Windows Explorer or the file dialog tht appears when you open a file within MuseScore. Folders are folders, they work the same in all programs.
This is all, again, basic computer literacy stuff, nothing to do with MuseScore specifically. I would encourage you to see if there is a local resource you can go to for help with basic computer management stuff like this.
And as I already explained, none of this affects the title - the text at the top of your score - in way whatsoever.
