Having trouble with staff spacers
I can't seem to get the staff spacers to work on my Mac (MuseScore 2.0.3.1, MacOS 10.12). I can drag a down spacer from the palette to a staff, double-click it to bring up the handle, then drag the handle downward, but nothing happens. Using the down arrow or the Inspector is the same---handle moves but staff doesn't. I don't see any postings about this in the forums so I figure I'm just missing something. Score attached. Thanks for any help.

Here it seems to work (Vista) changes something, for you, in the attachment?

If it is essential to keep the score on a single page ... I decreased the stretch of measures

Got it. Thanks very much. The key is understanding that the spacer acts on the staff below. I had the mistaken idea that the spacer would operate on the staff to which it was attached, and I wasn't moving the handle far enough to have any effect on the staff below.

You're welcome, buona musica ;-)

It *does* work on the staff to which it is attached. It is just a misunderstanding about *how* it works. The spacer specifies the *minimum distance between the current staff and the next*. There is also a version of the spacer that specifies the minimum distance between the current staff and the previous.

Whoa! The guru himself! Thanks for chiming in, and thanks for the book, which I not only bought but actually read. I obviously didn't follow the part about staff spacers (p. 343), which I had in front of me when I was struggling with them, but the book explains virtually everything in a way that's clear as a tutorial and very useful as a reference. The part about replace vs insert mode (p. 86) was worth the whole price of the book.

You're welcome, and thanks for the kind words!
I also am having great difficulty using spacers. I've tried dragging them on to the first measure of a staff, I've tried selecting and then double-clicking on the spacer option in the menu and nothing seems to work. At all. I don't even get a thing to click to either increase or decrease the spacer height. There's no indication of anything there or anything changed.
What the heck am I doing wrong? I'm sick of the handbook being almost useless and me still not being successful with what should be a straightforward. This is just one example among many.
I also have a Mac (10.10.5) and am using MuseScore (2.0.3.1)

Once the spacer is in place , double click it. The handle should then work.

Thanks, but like I said, there's no indication that even a spacer has been added so there is nothing to click on to get me a handle.

Have you set 'show unprintable' to off?

Yep, that's got to be it - you must have turned off the option to show these. Just go to the View menu and turn it back on.
Meanwhile, if you are having problems with other things, feel free to start threads and ask questions.

Did the bar you were attaching the spacer to change colour before you released it?
